The Sculptural Desert: I promised pics of the desert after our great trip to Palm Springs, CA… and here they are!
I didn’t think I was going to like the desert. It had been a long, long time since I was in the desert climate, and being honest, I was more sombre about the landscape than I was about the 110 F temperatures. I am an Autumn kind-of-a girl. I like things rich, and lush, and flowing. Mountains. Changing leaves. Waterfalls. I like things green. I love lying in the grass. I love the smell of the crisp mountain air.
So, I assumed I would be a fish out of water in the desert.
But, I was wrong.
What I found were the purest forms of sculpture that Creation has to offer. The Modern Art of the ages. There was DRAMA in the desert!
I thought that “sparse” would mean dull….. instead, it meant clean lines. purity. and simplicity. And I am full of inspiration!
Does the sculptural desert inspire you?
How do these images inspire you??

Wonderful pictures! Thanks for always providing inspiration!
thanks teeny!
Ok, so I am not going to lie. At first glance in my reader I thought this post was called “Sculptural Dessert”, lol. #INeedGlasses
I love the tree with all the branches. It is so natural and beautiful. I also love the rock with the wood grain markings. Or is it a tree? I don’t know but I love it! It would be great fabric.
Thanks for sharing!
haha! perfect!!! I should do a study of how many hits you get on a post if you use the word DeSSert in the title!!
The branchy tree is either a manzanita or a madrone. They’re related and it’s hard to tell them apart in a picture! Manzanita have smaller leaves and, in my opinion, their berries taste better.
I grew up in CA and lived for years on the central coast, where the mountains are populated with those trees and where the berries on cereal make every Girl Scout camp feel like Swiss Family Robinson!
Oh that was wonderful… the bare, fluid shapes and everything… so pretty. I really liked the photo of (is it sap?) sap dripping on the rocks. The glistening over the dry. Darlene what a fun insiration today!
Thanks Marie!! That is sap from a huge pine. It is aging and beginning the process of turning into Amber. You can see soft amber bubbles in the picture beneath it. Stunning, isn’t it??
My sil used to live in Palm Desert- we went to Joshua Tree Nat’l Park and saw similar scenes- so pretty in a different way!! And wow- how fun that you ate with DJ Tanner! 🙂 Now, can you vacation in AR and have lunch with me!??!
oh, I certainly hope so!!!!!!!
