The 3000 Thing Challenge
Do you own stuff? Or does your stuff own you? Join me in the 3000 Thing Challenge!
Every once in a while, I get so tired of it, I could scream.
Stuff takes OVER.
And you have heard me say here before that “You cannot have a beautiful space if it is filled with junk.” Tough love? Maybe. But it is true. If you look around you and see clutter and pieces and papers and piles… you will not experience the freedom that comes with a beautiful, clean slate.
In the month of January, I am taking a simple challenge that I heard about from my friend Nicole. I decided to make it a “Thing,” and I do so hope you will join me!!!
Do you own stuff? Or does your stuff own you? Join me in the 3000 Thing Challenge! #declutter #3000ThingChallenge (<-Tweet This)
All you need to do is get rid of 3000 Things in the month of January.
Give them away. Donate them en masse. Throw them out. Get them out from under your roof. 3000 things.
Go one drawer at a time. One closet at a time. Do a little each day. Or go to town for 5 days straight. Or dive in each weekend.
But imagine how much lighter you could feel in the New Year if you owned your stuff, instead of it owning you?? I, for one, am done with being a slave to a bunch of things!
For people who are overwhelmed at the thought… just think: you could probably toss at least 100 things from your junk drawer of pens and pencils alone! 100 little things a day will add up to 3000 things (+ or -) in the first month of 2016!
Are you ready to start this year a little lighter?
If so, comment below and tell us all that you are IN!!!
PS There are a zillion awesome posts out there on the HOW of decluttering. Just do a quick Pinterest search and you will find something great. Questions you can ask yourself, etc. My advice? I just chant “Be ruthless. Be ruthless. Be ruthless.” when I declutter. You can do this!

Definitely in! The number is a little scary so I’m shooting for 1000 in January! There are spaces I haven’t looked through since 1977. Yes, you read that right! The year our home was built. Bring it on!
Enjoy your blog so much! I’m always excited to start new year. Love this challenge….I’m in!
I started this morning! I have already found that the crazy “almost impossible” number is helping to push me to get rid of things I really already should have! If you only make it to 2,343, so what!!?? Proud of you for diving in!

Happy NEW Year Darlene!
Thank you for another great read and for pushing us followers forward to join you on this quest for freedom from “stuff”, so, we too can breathe in the beauty that surrounds us. It’s a wonderful way to start and reboot with a fresh clean slate and in the scope of “things” 3000 is not a big number to easily accomplish. I’m constantly sorting and tossing and trying to instill the mantra “less is more” to anyone who can see the real value in what lays beneath the piles. In the end there’s more joy when you hand it over to someone in need.
For the past few years I started only hanging “those” special ornaments on my tree and decorations around the house, getting rid of the fillers also known as “stuff” and while going through the undecorating process thinking about what I can pass on to family, friends and strangers.
Cheers xoxoT

Hmmm… that’s 100 things for 30 days. That seems a bit daunting…. but then again we don’t have any kids. That might be the difference maker.
I’m fascinated with this challenge Darlene…. but how did you reach the number? I Googled 3000 thing challenge and the only thing that came up was your pin from this article on Pinterest. 🙂 Which is cool. But…. left me wanting to know more other than the assumption that we have too much stuff and we need to get rid of it.
Hope you reach your challenge with joy and have a blessed new year!

Ok, I’m totally in. But…it will be easier for me than most, because we’re packing to move. And I have 6 kids, so we always have clutter to get rid of. Can’t wait to get moved with so much less junk! I am learning to be far more conscious of my puchases, buying fewer items, but of better quality and more versatile. So…here’s to a more intentional and conscientious 2016! Clutter out, quality in!

Love this idea…was already working on a list of things to do to start 2016 off in a great direction and this will fit perfectly! Can’t wait to get started!!

I was so pumped after reading today’s post! I am all in!! In fact, I couldn’t wait to get started. New Years Eve counts towards January, right? 🙂 Either way, I’m already starting 2016 with less “stuff”! Thank you for rockin’ at what you do and helping me find what I love! Blessings for the new year to you and your beautiful family!!
I counted New Years Eve, for SURE!

I’m in! Maybe I just have a lot of stuff, but i thought 3000 things sounded great! I think its the only way I’d really notice. I’m good at organizing my clutter so people don’t realize how much I have! I do have four kids too, so I can find a third in their spaces alone!

I’m in. My mom is coming for a one month visit in January and I’ve asked her to help me with my drawers and cupboards. They are not as neat and tidy as I would like them so things will need to go. I’m not sure about 3000 though but I’ll do my best.
That overwhelming # is just meant to push you toward the goal! Go for it. I am surprised that I am almost up 200 with cleaning out 2 drawers and one cabinet!

This is perfect! I already had dubbed 2016 the year of the big clean so this will be a great challenge kick off…starting with at least 250 emails this morning moved to the trash pile. But not my favorite blog emails!
GREAT idea!!! Man, if I cleaned out my email, I could have 3000 done today!! LOVE THAT IDEA!

Only up to about 30 so far, but that was just a quick sweep of the pantry. There are some major spots I have to hit still. Junk drawer anyone? And the closets….ohhhhhh the closets.
I’m in! Let the weight lifting begin!
SO TRUE!! What number are you up to? I would love it if you would share!! Join our community over at Facebook, where I have a recent post asking you what number you are up to!!: https://www.facebook.com/fieldstonehilldesign/
we downsized 5 years ago and we no longer keep anything that doesn’t bring us joy. What doesn’t is given away to others. It is definitely a freeing feeling. Courage to all those just beginning this journey. Baby steps. Be kind to yourself in this process. Some people vow to lose weight in the New Year. I desire to weigh less–be less of a burden to myself and others.
About four months ago we downsized from 1400 sq ft to 672 sq ft. Before the move we took at least three trailer loads to the thrift store. We have two young children and two dogs. I was very happy with how much I let go but am finding that we need to shed more to make small house living work. I started this weekend on the 3000 item challenge and have five bins of items for a sale and four bags of items to be donated. I feel good but have more to do to make this small house functional and organized.
I’m in! I think I could come up with 3,000 things from inside and on my desk alone!!
