design board :: a sophisticated great room {plus floor plan}
Thursday, August 30, 2012 by {darlene}

My client just moved into a new home, and just as you enter her house, you come right into a soaring great room. The ceiling is 2.5 stories high in some places, and there is a stone fireplace that rises between a wall of windows. My goal was to create a sophisticated great room that felt welcoming, and worked for a young family.

Spaces that are large and grand, like great rooms, often need to be “brought down to size” by creating a break in the height, and by using different “room zones” throughout the room. Room zones are different conversation groupings, as well as different furniture groupings that coexist within the same overall space.

In this welcoming family room, the “Room zones” that can be found are:

1. Entryway

2. Music room

3. Conversation/Main seating area

4. Desk area

Not all of these zones are distinguishable on the Design Board, so I thought I would also show you the floor plan for this space:

My client had a lot of furniture that she wanted to integrate into the space. The design board consists of both her current furnishings, brand new furnishings, family heirlooms, and re-upolstered pieces.

What I love about this space:

1. The contrasting mix of traditional and graphic prints.

2. The cool aquas versus the warm melon tones.

3. The sophisticated white X-benches with chocolate piping {that match the nesting boxes on the console!}.

4. The client’s antique table that is being used as a desk.

5. The elegant tone-on-tone look of the walls and the curtains.

6. Warm and modern pillows dress up a comfy leather sofa.

7. Splashes of gold accents are strewn throughout.

8. The lemon trees!

9. The stunning accent fabrics. Even pricey fabrics can make an appearance when used in moderation.

What do you think of this eDesign? Have you ever thought about adding “room zones” to your space?  I love hearing your thoughts!

Whole Food Eating :: whole food cole slaw {with secret ingredient}
Wednesday, August 29, 2012 by {darlene}

Just in time for Labor Day Pitch-Ins, I am excited to share my Whole Food Cole Slaw recipe with you!

whole food cole slaw

This marks the very first post in my Living with Beauty series.  What better way to kick it off than to talk about beauty from the inside-out? We can literally build beauty {glowing skin, healthy bodies, etc.} by eating food that works as fuel. And that is the beauty of Whole Foods. More on whole foods to come; promise!!

I have so much to share with you about Whole Food Eating, but I was eager to get this recipe to you before the last hurrah of Summer. You will notice that this recipe does not call for Mayonnaise. But there is a secret ingredient that more than makes up for the Mayo. I hope you enjoy sharing this cole-slaw recipe with your friends this Labor Day!

{disclaimer for people who get their panties in a wad: I do not follow a 100% Whole Foods diet -but I try, and the following recipe includes some ingredients that are not technically considered a Whole Food – ex. dijon mustard – but can be purchased as minimally-processed, minimal/real ingredients, and/or organic. Always read food labels to eliminate fake and chemical foods. Thank you kindly.}

My {secret ingredient} Whole Food Cole Slaw

1 cup grape tomatoes, halved
1.5 cups of grated swiss cheese {here it is!! the secret ingredient}
1/2 c.-3/4 c. of homemade 24 hr. fermented yoghurt {see recipe here}, or substitute organic plain yoghurt
1/4 c. organic canola oil {if not organic, it will likely be high in genetically modified ingredients and pesticides. Use olive oil if you don’t have organic canola oil}
1 teas. dijon mustard {watch labels for added sugar}
1 teas. honey
1/4 teas. celery seed
salt to taste
pepper to taste

Directions:

Combine above ingredients. Adjust wet-to-dry ingredient ratio to your preferences. Serve and Enjoy!

Inspired To :: Be a fall fashion diva. Wear bold deep-red lipstick. Coif my eyebrows to perfection. Get a wide-brimmed hat … I have been meaning to! Remember that little accessories make a big difference. Get excited about wearing “camel” colored items in the fall. Put on a fantastic waist-cinching belt to polish off my outfit. Find a way to copy that amazing teeny-tiny silk-scarf bracelet {without having to sew}… genius readers, any ideas? Wear mint matte nailpolish. Strike a pose. Carry a clutch.

So. What does this picture inspire you to do/feel/create/think……

What are you Inspired To?

ditto-worthy designer :: david scott interiors
Monday, August 27, 2012 by {darlene}

When I come across an interior designer whose rooms speak to me, and inspire me in several ways, I am sure to bookmark their work. Recently, I came across the work of David Scott Interiors while hunting down the design credit for a baby room I adore. And then I discovered that much of his work is ditto-worthy.

My favorite things about David Scott’s style are his ability to decorate within grand settings, his children’s spaces, and also his amazing exteriors and outdoor spaces. These are his most ditto-worthy elements, in my eyes.

I believe it is important to study the work of interior designers, and use your “ditto” eyes. It is essential in helping you define your own personal style.

With that thought in mind, what would YOU ditto from David Scott Interiors?

Did you notice the grand scale of so many of these spaces, and how David balances large pieces with open breathing room? Also, those outdoor “rooms” are so dreamy to me!

What would you ditto?

What elements of David Scott’s style could you bring into your own home?
