the first pretty thing to do for Christmas { Minted Cards Discount }
Thursday, November 8, 2012 by {darlene}

This year, for the first time ever I think, I was on the ball for ordering my Christmas cards. And can I tell you how excited I am? Maybe. Just maybe, I won’t be up until 1 in the morning the week or so before Christmas, frantically filling out our holiday greetings to send to friends!!

It feels wonderful! I totally recommend that you get on the ball this year.

And now, since I am semi-organized, you will all get a glimpse at our Christmas cards – which are simply amazing! Hands down, these are the most beautiful Christmas cards I have ever seen, and I am SUPER excited to know about this company:

Minted is a stationery and paperie company {they sell invitations of all kinds, any kind of Wedding paperie you could think of, holiday cards, business cards, and even art prints}. But not just ANY stationery company. The designers for Minted are handpicked design artists from 43 COUNTRIES around the world!! That means that Minted gives support to creative artists across the globe. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that!!

{If you are a big nerd about your love for small-business artists, like moi, you will love reading Minted’s About Us page}

There is nothing boring or run of the mill about their designs. And I wish you could feel them. Solid as a rock, I tell ya. Maybe my pics will at least give you a glimpse of how quality these cards are:

Minted Holiday Cards - 1

One of my favorite Minted Cards feature is their option to personalize the back. We had lots of fun thinking about our year’s highlights {forgive me for erasing family names. Our nephew actually DOES have a name}. I love that this is a quick way to share little family details and connect with friends that we don’t get to see as much as we would like:

Minted Holiday Cards

Don’t you love them?

design board :: the keeping room {I vote for pretty + breaking news}
Tuesday, November 6, 2012 by {darlene}

I recently finished a kitchen keeping room for a client that turned out to be SO pretty.

{sidebar: a keeping room is an area/room that is just off of the kitchen. It can also be called a hearth room, and now, most people call this room a family room}

This room  has a whole lot of pretty: a pretty view, a pretty color palette, and plenty of pretty furnishings.

I like pretty.

{sidebar: one thing I do not like is politics. I have vowed to keep the television off the entire day today – which is not unusual at our crazy house anyway, but we certainly don’t plan to veer from that today… however tempting it may seem.}

{sidebar to my sidebar: If you are reading FHD from USA, be sure you VOTE today! The end.}

What was I saying?

Oh, yes! I vote for pretty!

And so did my client as we dove into one of my recent projects, a keeping room that would serve as a beautiful, and also useful, family hangout.

One of the best features in this space was the view of a lake, so we kept that in mind throughout the project. Making sure that the lake could be seen and enjoyed was the priority. After that, my client wanted a place where she could work {a mini office using a secretary desk} while enjoying the lovely view as well. We wanted to have fun with color as well, while still keeping a sophisticated palette. I just love how this room evolved:

What I love about this space:

1. That amazing chesterfield sofa.

2. The bold coral color on the walls.

3. The steady presence of cream throughout the space that allows the eye to rest.

4. Stunning pillows that are worth the splurge.

5. The very subtle presence of birds and nests.

6. Pom-pom fringe curtain panels! Yay!

7. A ladies chair, all her own.

8. The graphic rug against the delicate, soft lines throughout.

9. That this room is pretty. We could all use a room that says, “pretty!” in our homes.

What do you think of this eDecor?  I love hearing your thoughts! Do you vote for pretty??

ditto :: a big pop of art
Monday, November 5, 2012 by {darlene}

One cannot help but notice the impressive pop of art that is featured in today’s ditto.* The room below is another amazing design by Katie Ridder, a designer I admire and would consider Ditto-Worthy. In fact, I wrote about her, and shared several of her amazing designs in this post.

Katie is a genius, and I think it is worth your time to study her use of scale in her interiors. This space is no exception!

*{What exactly is a ditto? :: The list below will break down for you many of the decorating concepts that are employed in this great space. As with all of our dittos, let’s study the DETAILS of what makes this space SO AMAZING, so that we can learn how to add more beauty to our own homes!!! And, as always, I look forward to hearing from you and finding out what you would ditto, too. So, be thinking!}

pop of art

 {Design by Katie Ridder, via Katie Ridder Rooms, click to purchase the book}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.    THE ULTIMATE COMFORT OF A DOWN-FILLED SOFA AND CHAIR.

There is nothing more luxurious than a sofa and chair stuffed with down. Not to mention comfortable – as the feathers conform to your shape. I would even consider replacing my current sofa cushions by filling the upholstery cases with down. Imitation down could also be used. Plus, you cannot beat the inviting fluff of a down sofa! Ditto! Check out my secret for adding some down to our own family sofa.

2.   THE BIG POP OF ART, OF COURSE.

The obvious stunner in this room is the huge artwork that fills the wall behind the sofa. Its sheer presence fills the room with life and color. Also, its vertical height also helps to balance the tall ceiling. The room instantly has a sophisticated, artful feel because the artwork is such a prominent feature. Can’t afford huge artwork? Get gutsy and Ditto-DIY your own art – just be sure to use the colors you love and have fun. But if you CAN afford art, please buy REAL art!! Ditto!!

3.  VELVET SOFAS.

How many times have I told you that I love velvet sofas? Or that I love velvet? Practical and luxurious and rich and even family friendly. Our living room at Fieldstone Hill has a velvet sofa and side chairs, of course! I LOVE velvet sofas.

4.  USE A CHANDY TO BALANCE A TALL CEILING.

In a cavernous room, you really do need to bring things down to size so that you can feel comfort. I think one of the most useful and basic tricks for accomplishing that in a room with a tall ceiling is the trick of adding a large, lower-hanging light fixture. Chandeliers are particularly wonderful because, not only do they create light, but they reflect light as well, pulling the eye lower and toward that light.  Ditto.

5.  A LARGE PILLOW WITH A POP OF A FAVORITE COLOR.

Do you see any other magenta in this room other than on the huge pillow that sits in the center of the sofa? No. But that one pop of magenta totally MAKES this room! So get gutsy, big and bold, and throw in a pillow that has a burst of your favorite color!

6.  PILES OF INVITING COFFEE-TABLE BOOKS.

Check out the Ditto-worthy collection of coffee table books in this space. I would love to sit down and read each and every one. There is something so inviting about sitting down on a sofa that is adjacent to beautiful books!

7. A CROWN ON THE WALL, OR ANY OTHER OFF-THE-WALL ITEM, TO ADD BALANCE.

I love the creative randomness of the crown that is featured as art in this room. It is fun and draws the attention of your eye after you have perused the gorgeous art-work. Because of that, I think it draws your eye down and into the coziness of the sitting area in this space. I wonder what fun things I could pop on the wall, next to some stunning art??

* * * * * * *

SO much goodness.

Love anything I did not mention? or…

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-7? SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!
