ditto :: minimal maximal dining
Monday, March 11, 2013 by {darlene}

Today’s ditto * is a look at a minimal maximal dining space.

What in the world do I mean by minimal maximal? Well, the amazing dining room below is “minimal” in that the room is quite sparse. There is not an excess of accessories or furnishings. But it is “maximal” because the individual choices are “big” in impact. The chandy, the wallpaper, the fabric, the materials. All have the power of presence, yet in a classic way.

*{What exactly is a ditto? :: The list below will break down for you many of the decorating concepts that are employed in this great space. As with all of our dittos, let’s study the DETAILS of what makes this space SO AMAZING, so that we can learn how to add more beauty to our own homes!!! And, as always, I look forward to hearing from you and finding out what you would ditto, too. So, be thinking!}

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.    THAT WALLPAPER.

No wallflower here. Maximum impact instead! This dining room features wallpapers by Schumacher. Yet, the only space it takes up is a few millimeters off of the walls. Gutsy wallpaper is a fantastic way to get maximal impact in minimal space. Ditto!

2.   A SHOW-STOPPING CHANDELIER.

If you are hoping for  a glam and gorgeous space, do NOT skimp on your chandy. A chandy is the equivalent of jewelry. You can take the most dull outfit and make it fabulous if you do the jewelry right. The same can be said of chandeliers, without a doubt. This tiered chandy is from Corbett Lighting. But huge-impact chandy’s can still be had for a song.  Ditto!!

3.  FOR A NEUTRAL COLORED ROOM, KEEP BRILLIANT FLOWERS ON HAND.

This room could feel a bit lifeless. Just cover up the flower arrangement! The walls and the chandy still dance, but you cannot underestimate the importance of those beautiful flowers that overflow on the table. I know that plants make a huge difference in my home, whether they are just greens picked from my yard, or a bunch of sunflowers from the grocery store. ditto!

4.  BLACK AND WHITE.

This is all about contrast. Contrast is key in excellent decorating. The black and white is a simple scheme: minimal. But together, they create a dramatic contrasting energy: maximal. Ditto.

5.  DINING IN THE ROUND.

A round dining table does not work in every dining room or in every home, but I love them because they are perfect for conversation. Is this stunning round dining table made from marble? Alabaster? It is amazing.

6.  DARE TO ADD FABRIC TO A DINING ROOM.

This is not for everyone. And personally, I don’t think you should have rooms that you hardly ever use. BUT, if you should happen to already have a dining room that barely gets used, and I can’t talk you into making it into a more useful space, then, by all means, you should add some fabric! Not everyone gets the chance to add gorgeous fabrics to their dining spaces!

7.  MINIMAL ACCESSORIES.

This room has all the accessories it needs, but nothing more. The room breathes because it is not overflowing with stuff. Therefore, the beauty of the room’s pieces shine through from “maximal” impact. Ditto!

* * * * * * *

SO much goodness.

Love anything I did not mention? or…

WHAT WOULD YOU DITTO {STEAL} FROM THIS SPACE, 1-7? SOMETHING ELSE?

I LOVE HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS!

before and after :: In-Home Consultations {+a new service}
Wednesday, March 6, 2013 by {darlene}

I recently had an In-Home Consultation with a local client, and it was such a blast. In just a few hours, we poured through countless design questions for her home and tackled a slew of design challenges with practical AND beautiful solutions.

Just the other day, she sent me before and after pics of one of our favorite transformations: her living room sofa.

My client saw her sofa as the sore-spot in her living room. But, with one small toddler and another on the way, it did not make sense to replace the sofa right now. So she was hoping that we could work around it:

{BEFORE}:

skype in-home consultation So instead, we transformed it!!:

{AFTER}:

 In-Home Consultation

This is just one glimpse of all the fun changes that we made in her home.

In this corner of her home, we changed:

  • The sofa, by recovering the back pillows in gorgeous fabrics {Hicks’ La Fiorentina in wine, and hand-crafted Navy “flag” pillow covers}
  • The sofa, by adding a lumbar pillow to balance {in color and size} the large back pillows
  • The rug, by adding a larger rug, with a fresh, modern, subtle pattern and a soft gray tone
  • The coffee table, by sawing the edges to make them straight {for a crisper, updated look}, and painting it in a deep navy gloss.
  • The coffee table, by sawing down the legs a bit to make the height more comfortable for foot lounging.
  • The coffee table, by adding brass hardware to the drawer, and turning the table around so the drawer can be seen.
  • The bare wall, by adding dramatic, moody, colorful artwork and flanking the art with matching brass sconces.

These small changes made obvious impact!:

In-Home Consultation

I am thrilled with the results of this entire consultation. My client came to me with not only a willingness to take my suggestions, but also to get busy and make them happen! I appreciated that so much, and I really see that it has paid off in her lovely home!

I love giving in-home consultations. I love brainstorming with my clients and helping them come up with beautiful, practical, livable solutions for their homes. And if they are willing to do the follow-through to make their dreams come true, an in-home consultation can prove to be a super affordable way to completely transform your home …. with the help of fresh ideas from a designer!

* * *

I really do love these In-Home Consults; it is so much fun to brainstorm with home owners to help them find decorating solutions. Of course, I had to find a way to do In-Home consults with all of you… across the country and {so excited!!} around the world!

So, I am excited to announce my latest eDesign Consultation:

The Skype In-Home Consultation { <- click on this link to read all the details about my latest eDesign consultation}

I hope we will get some face time together – making your home more beautiful!

So, what do you think of this simple sofa transformation? Do tell!!
