How to make a Luxury Bed

How to make a luxury bed

Sometimes it is the little things.

And today I am chatting about a little detail in my life that makes me SO. STINKIN. HAPPY.

my bed.

What? You don’t have daydreams about your own bed all day long? Really? Yeah, well. I totally do.

I love my bed. L.O.V.E.

I mean, just gaze upon her loveliness {cue heavenly violins}:

How to make a luxury bed

I could crawl right in. {and recently, I have been doing that a lot!}

The bed itself is mid-century, given to us with love from my parents.

The mattress is one of those extra deep, foam-topped-totally-worth-every-penny, mattresses.  Sadly, it may be reaching the end of its lifespan, but it has served us well.

***

But today, I want to chit chat about what is on top of my bed! And, how exactly I make my bed. And not just any bed, but a heavenly luxury bed, inspired by the very few luxury hotels that we have been able to visit. I did not see any reason why I could not have a bed that felt as wonderful for my every day. So, I studied every comfy detail and set out to create European bed luxury in my own home.

So now. My secrets?

 How to Make a Luxury Bed {the simple and easy way}

1. Down duvet{s}. {down alternative can be used if you are allergic. otherwise, go with down!}

2. I don’t use a flat/top sheet at all.

3. I intentionally buy deliciously soft fitted sheets,

4. and an equally deliciously soft sheet duvet cover.

The pic below shows the elements that make up my bed:

How to make a luxury bed

The details:

1. Fitted Sheet:

  • My fitted sheet is microfiber and comes from Butterfly Dreams and is incredibly, incredibly soft. I usually wear socks to bed, but since I got these sheets, I take them off as soon as my feet warm up… these are toe-worthy sheets, totally different {softer} from any other sheets I have had!
  • When looking for a sheet, I try to make sure the thread count is ridiculously high or that the sheet is incredibly buttery soft to the touch. When selecting a fitted sheet, do not skimp on softness! This is key to making a luxury bed!

2. The duvet and cover:

  • My down duvet insert itself is a “year round medium weight” down comfortable, like this one with baffle weaving. This weight means it can be used year round, even in the summer. Just toss on a sheet-weight duvet cover…
  • The sheet duvet cover that I have is also from Butterfly Dreams. Equally amazing softness, from microfiber. I usually go with a duvet that is all white, and is actually nothing more than a sheet. This particular duvet has a little extra dressy touch that I love: a classy chocolate piping border {I ordered the ivory, with chocolate brown embroidery}.
  • We sleep directly under the duvet and its “sheet” cover. No top sheet. Just fitted sheet and duvet. This is probably the biggest secret to our luxury bed. This way, the fluffy down is the layer under which we sleep directly.
  • Definitely do not skimp on quality and softness when selecting your duvet cover. This is what you will get to wiggly your toes in every night! Be sure your sheets and sheet duvet cover are soft.
3. The decorative cover:
  • This cover is optional for warmth, but I think necessary for good bed design.
  • This cover can be nearly anything that you would like to fold up and put at the end of your bed, as long as it is lovely. This is  a great chance to add color.
  • Our tomato-orange duvet cover is from Mateo {unfortunately, it is 5 years old and is no longer available}. Inside, we have another medium weight down comforter/duvet. This extra down keeps us warm on the coolest of nights, otherwise, we simply take it off of our bed at night.
4. Pillows:
  • Behind our decorative pillows, we have 3 down pillows, with simple white covers {soft of course!}. Mine is super soft because I am a stomach sleeper. My husband is a back and side sleeper, so his is stuffed more thickly.

One amazing benefit of this set up is that it makes bed-making a super easy chore. All you do is toss up your duvet, and guess what? Bed made!

But truly, the best part is that, if you make soft sheets a priority, along with a fluffy down comforter, you can easily have a luxury bed that feels like you are staying in a five-star hotel…. every night!

overcoming decorating paralysis :: the mute button

The Mute Button:

How to listen to advice without losing yourself

the mute button{this post is part of a series that will help you break free from Decorating Paralyis}

* * *

It can be very helpful to get the opinions of others when you are wrestling over a decorating decision. Sometimes, we overanalyze, and can’t see the forest for the trees. This is when it can be especially helpful to reach out to others for a tie breaker, or to have them talk some sense into us.

The trick is, we tend to make two mistakes with this good advice that we are given:

1. We give it too much weight and forget who we are and what we love, and/or

2. We allow it to propel us into a state of confusion!

Once we have asked our trusted advisers for help, we need to learn how to use this advice for the BETTER, not for the WORSE!

How do we do this?

Some tips:

1. Consider the opinion of others. The key word here is “consider.” Establish in your mind beforehand that you are simply gathering opinions that you can consider.

2. Do you tend to feel locked into others’ advice? Tell your friends you are “gathering opinions to consider what to do,” instead of  directly asking, “What should I do??” Depending on your personality, asking outright ‘what you should do’ may make you feel obligated to do exactly as they advise.

3. Know thyself! In other words, if you do not know what you love PRIOR to asking advice from others, you will simply sway like the breeze with your decisions. This will lead you into a complete state of decorating confusion! You MUST know what YOU love in order to confidently decorate your home. {Good news, I can totally help you with that! Definitely do the Style Bootcamp to get started! And then fine tune by making a Signature Style Board}

4. Last but not least, after CONSIDERING the advice of your friends, and KNOWING what you love: press the MUTE BUTTON!

the mute button

 What is the mute button? The mute button is what we “press” when we have:

  1. Finished considering the decorating advice of our friends, and
  2. we are at the point when we need to silence their voices and listen to our own voice!
Last week, I posted about potentially doing gray/blue cabinets in our brand new school room. I asked my amazing readers for their thoughts, and you guys did not let me down! By the end of the day, I knew what I wanted to do. But before I made my final decision, there was a good bit of mind wrestling that I did.
I really took to heart all of your comments, and considered your great thoughts and opinions.
Then, I really thought about what I LOVE, and gave that incredible weight in my decision.
Then, I realized my decision required some guts, so, I needed to silence any voices that didn’t “give me the guts.”

So, after reading all of your awesome comments…. I pressed the mute button.

The mute button is the button you press when you need to hush others’ decor voices that are in your head. { <- Tweet this}

Since my readers are brilliant and smart and stylish and savvy, there wasn’t too much to silence. But eventually, we need to DECIDE. We need to pick what WE love, and go for it, and don’t turn back with a head full of doubt.

Because you see, what someone else would do in their home is JUST THAT. It is what THEY should do in THEIR homes.

And asking for others opinions is smart. It is gathering all the facts. But at some point, when you are ready to make YOUR decision, the mute button must be pressed.

And then, {you have heard me say it before, and it won’t be the last time}:

Decorate with what you LOVE!!

How about you? Have you had to press the mute button? Tell me your mute button stories in the comments below!

Images Of Stone Gardens

{Enjoy more “Images Of collections to get inspiration for your home}

My last “Images Of” post featured outdoor living and outdoor rooms. Today, stone gardens. Can anyone here say: “Spring Fever??”

Friends, I have had a pile of brick and fieldstone sitting in my backyard for 5 years. FIVE years. You see, there is always another project {or trip, or car dying, or major appliance to replace, or now-or-never room project} that seems to sweep away my dream of finishing my backyard brick and stone patio project.

But that’s okay.

Because good things come to those who wait. I’m counting on it.

And in the meantime, you had better believe I am having just as much fun dreaming about a patio! {maybe even more fun…}. And this isn’t even my first time.

And ahhh, the Stone Gardens shall be glorious! I can see them now….

There is something so magical and old-worldly about Stone Gardens. As if time can just stand still among the rocks of the ages…

How about you? Do you have a love affair with Stone Gardens?

* * * * *

One of my favorite books ever. It reminds me of why I battle the love affair with our stone home/money pit.

Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania’s Bucks County and Brandywine Valley

So sad that this is out of print, but maybe you can snag a pricey copy from Amazon, or get super lucky at your local used bookstore.
