Bébé bébé bébé Nursery

Bebe bebe bebe nursery series

{preggers update: I do not, I repeat, DO NOT look like this anymore! haha. 10 weeks left folks!}

Thursdays is the day for the Bébé bébé bébé Nursery series here at FHD: featuring Girl Nurseries designed by some of the most gifted designers and creative decor bloggers from around the web. {Need some boy nursery awesomeness? Check out Bijou and Boheme‘s Baby Baby Baby Nursery series.}

Today’s designer is the Lisa Mende of Lisa Mende Design. I met Lisa via blogland, and through the Master Designer Blog Roll, and I have loved getting to know her through her blog. If you have not met her before, Lisa is an AMAZING designer, with the kindest heart, bravest of stories, and oh, this girl can ROCK a design board. You will enjoy getting to know her. I am so thrilled to have her here at FHD, and so excited to see what she has in mind for my little bébé.

Hello, I’m Lisa of Lisa Mende Design.  I am so honored Darlene asked me to participate in this series.   Darlene has impeccable taste so I was beyond flattered to be asked to design a board for her bebe girl!  When I saw this fabulous paper from Graham and Brown I knew I wanted to incorporate it in the room’s scheme, so I started from there as my inspiration. This nursery was intentionally designed to grow into a big girl room. I have been loving all the lavender I’m seeing in fabrics these days.  Isn’t lavender suppose suppose to relax and induce sleep?  Here’s hoping Darlene’s little bundle will have “sweet dreams” in this room fit for a little princess.

Oh so dreamy! And relaxing!! I love the gentle, girly nature of it all. Lisa is right, that wallpaper is beautiful, and really creates amazing inspiration for this nursery. I ADORE the lighting that Lisa used throughout the room – each and every piece, especially the Syro Chandelier. It is like a glam light fixture and baby mobile all in one. I can just picture baby girl watching it with joy! I also love that there is NO skimping on the art. Perfect!

Thank you SO much, Lisa, for this gorgeous nursery. It would certainly bring on the “sweet dreams!”

I am having so much fun with this series. What fun to be planning a nursery in a time when the choices are endless, gorgeous and flexible! My girl’s design board may be done already, but the GORGEOUS ideas just keep coming! Thank you to all you amazing gals for such great designs.

Be sure to leave some comment love here for Lisa, sharing your thoughts on this beautifully designed space!

lessons in design :: Finding the right white {project nursery}
Wednesday, June 26, 2013 by {darlene}

I loved reading about all the interior decorator’s faves in yesterday’s post: Decorator Recommended Whites. It definitely got me excited to try some new whites.

Which is a good thing, since I am planning on using white walls in both Project Nursery AND Project Library.

So, once you have a selection of whites to choose from, how do you go about Finding the Right White ?

The fact of the matter is: you never truly know what a white is going to look like until it is painted – on the wall – in your space. I wish there were another way, but truthfully, you must try it on the wall first. And, therefore, the hunt for the perfect white can be so frustrating.

But there are some steps you can take to narrow down the insanity.

Finding the Right White

How to find the right white:

1. Start with good recommendations from friends and designers {ideally those who have actually used that paint color.}

2. Do some further investigating online by searching for finished ROOMS that have been done in that/those paint colors. Some paint colors are easy to find in images, and some are not. But, if you can find several pictures online in an actual room, this can give you a better idea of how that white actually look/feel in a space.

3. Narrow down your choices based on your own personal style. {ex. Do you love greens? Then don’t be afraid of whites with green undertones. If you prefer the warmth of a creamy white, don’t listen to someone who says they hate yellows in their whites.}

4. Narrow down your choices based on the room’s purpose {ex. I wasn’t afraid to go a little creamy pink in the girl’s nursery. In the library, my focus was keeping the room bright since the cabinets will be dark.}

5. The most important step: Buy several samples of the different paint colors and paint them on the wall! Oh, it can be so tempting to skip this step. But don’t!

6. Once you see the paint on your walls, you will need to then 1. Trust your instincts and then 2. Just GO for it!

Here are some pics of me putting my own advice to work here at Fieldstone Hill, in project nursery:

Finding the right white

Finding the right whiteThe step of painting the samples up on the walls was, of course, the MOST helpful part of the process. No matter how tempted you are to skip this step, I repeat, don’t!!

So, what did I decide?

Well, the winner is Farrow and Ball Clunch! It had a touch of pink without reading “pink,” and it had the subtle but clear contrast to our trim color that I was going for.

I could have never figured all this out from a paint swatch!

I can’t wait to show you the pics!!! Soooooo pretty! Ooh, you are going to love it!

Designer Recommended Whites

Designer Recommended Whites

Picking white paint colors can be like pure torture. Who’s with me?

So, silly me. I decided to incorporate white walls into BOTH of our current room projects: Project Library AND Project Nursery.

For the Nursery, I am wanting to paint the walls {and accent moulding} a rich, creamy white, with a slightly lighter trim and crown.

For the Library, I am going with a deep gray-blue on the cabinets {Down Pipe by Farrow and Ball}, and then white on the small remaining amount of wall space.

And while I do have a favorite white {you’ll find it below}, I am going to have fantastic moulding in these spaces, and want to play around with trim, crown, wall and moulding whites. More than one white needed… sigh.

So, I called in the Calvary for their awesome input: to save me from myself, and to rescue me from White Over-Analysis Insanity.

“For white I like Benjamin Moore White Dove. But for soft ivory, (or walls that look white but really aren’t),  I love Benjamin Moore Seashell.  Then, for a little more yellow in it but still ivory (and my fav!!) is Benjamin Moore Ancient Ivory.”

“Benjamin Moore White Dove, Behr Swiss Coffee and Benjamin Moore Simply White OC117 are all consistently good for trim and work with most color palettes. Sherwin Williams Alabaster 7008, Sherwin Williams Marshmallow 7001, and Farrow & Ball (1/2 formula) “Lime White” are my go-to whites for creamy white walls. Not sure how deep you want to go but these are very neutral. If you want a deeper, creamier white, I love Sherwin Williams Casa Blanca 7571 for walls too. It is soft, creamy and luscious.”

Holly Mathis of Holly Mathis Interiors:

“Farrow & Ball Clunch. My client was struggling to find the right white or neutral as a background in her home.  White seemed too sterile, and neutrals like my fave BM revere pewter didn’t feel right either..Clunch by F&B provides color but still feels clean and neutral – the next best thing to white. She actually spotted a room by Loi Thai of Tone on Tone, and we emailed him to inquire about the color. He told us it was Clunch..he is so nice!!!”

“Sherwin Williams Alabaster 7008 for walls;
Sherwin Williams Snowbound 7004 for walls (this is a white white that’s cool. I’m in this really white phase for walls, so I love this one…it’s actually in my dining room below the chair rail & wallpaper);
Sherwin Williams Creamy 7012 -walls or trim for this one;  and you might like Sherwin Williams Antique White 6119 if you want a creamy warm tone.”

Darlene Weir of Fieldstone Hill Design {oh hey. that’s me. and my sassy new picture}:

Designer Recommended Whites

“My favorite white ever is Sherwin Williams French Ivory 8017 from the former Martha Stewart collection, which can still be mixed at Sherwin Williams. I love it because it is 100% creamy, but 100% crisp at the same time. Not a shred of dinginess to the yellow-cream undertones. And, it is the best trim color because it makes every wall color look richer and more sophisticated. Every time I put this color one the walls, I mutter to myself: ‘I just LOVE this color.’ I also love the Farrow and Ball whites because of their depth. You can’t go wrong with F&B Pointing for a classic and classy trim color – it works with everything.'”

project nursery :: wall moulding ditto and the great white challenge
Monday, June 24, 2013 by {darlene}

Happy {ditto} Monday! Ditto posts: learn how to ditto a designer room

When I was dreaming about the canvas for baby girl’s room, I wanted to be sure that the the floors and the walls of the room were a beautiful first layer.

Here is the nursery BEFORE, in its former life as a school room {check out the walls and floors}.

school room - fieldstone hill design school room 2 - fieldstone hill design

The floors and architecture in this room are special already, thanks to the amazing workmanship of the historic homes built in the days of the 1820’s. Our floors are restored antique pines that are original to the home, and the windows have original moulding and are 2 feet deep. Even with all of that architectural detail, I still wanted to add more interest and dimension to the walls themselves.

Here is the design board for my nursery. You can see that I am really wanting to glam and global and girlie up this space!

Enter the joy of ditto-ing another designer’s brilliance:

When I saw the gorgeous nursery of Christine‘s new babe, I knew immediately: moulding is the answer! A simple way to add architectural extravagance.

Check out the rich walls in her sweet baby boy’s nursery:

moulding Jasper Nursery

{images via Christine’s fab house tour}

The moment I saw this space, I knew I had to ditto that wall moulding.

AND, of course, add a few girly architectural touches of my own! {affiliate link}

For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a sneak preview of the moulding in our nursery. {Loving Instagram by the way. It is like the quickie of blog posts. Perfect for up-to-the-minute house project updates and cute family snippets}

Now. Here is what the room looked like last week {via Instagram}. The pic makes things look better than in real life, paint-wise. In this snapshot, the old wall color is on the walls and the mouldings simply have primer on them:

moulding

My original plan was to paint the moulding and the walls the same color – a rich cream, while leaving the crown, windows and floorboard in a paler ivory. But, after seeing the contrast of the white moulding against the walls, I started dreaming of contrasting picture frame moulding.

Enter The Great White Challenge!

There is NOTHING harder in wall-paint land than picking out the white of your dreams. Proceed with caution, but it CAN be done well!

This week I will be sharing all about how to find the perfect white for your space… You will not want to miss a single post!

and, wait for it,

I have in the works, a HUGE post filled with Top Designer Recommended Whites!

Finally, I will share the gorgeous whites I picked for my nursery, with reveal picks! I can’t wait to show you!!!!!
