Inspiration :: Above Ground Pool

Our family enjoyed a fantastic week at the Lake Cabin last week. We try to make it there once or twice a year, ah, but it is always hard to say goodbye. {and hard to recover. hence my lack of a ditto post this week}

In the middle of the summer, in the middle of Indiana, in the middle of the country, days are quiet and country and pure. If you don’t like the weather there, they say to wait 10 minutes, and it will change.One of my favorite days was when an all-out downpour brought the entire family into the screened porch, where we watched the lake disappear into a fog of gray, from sheets of falling water. It was beautiful. And the sounds and smells were purely summer.

The boys are always in heaven when we head to the Lake. And, at Nana and Pop Pop’s home, there is also a pool. Our toughest decision of the week is usually, “Is it a pool day, or a lake day?” Usually, for weeks before our visits and weeks after, I get to hear the classic childhood cry, “Can we get a pool??????”

With the maintenance of a 180 year old farmhouse like Fieldstone Hill, I am rarely tempted to take on any more “maintenance burdens,” like, oh, say, a pool. But after a leisurely rest, with Midwest Living Magazine in hand…. and the echo of my boys’ pleas in my ears…, I was nearly brought to the dark side by one single magazine image…

And I never would have thought that it would be an above ground pool that has me dreaming! {Truly! Check out my usual in-ground pool obsession in this post}

But, magazine in hand, I soaked in the simplicity of this beauty.

Is this not the most wonderful above ground pool you have ever seen?

What I love about it/ What I would ditto:

1. It is fully integrated into the exterior look of the house, with siding that matches the home’s exterior shingles. Whether or not you have a nantucket look to your home, you could easily use this same technique with lots of different siding choices.

2. It is a part of the decking that attaches to the house.

3. It is simple. A basic rectangular shape that remains classy.

4. It boasts an accompanying patio with a wood-burning fireplace and an outdoor-shower {can you see it to the left of the fireplace? Fabulous!!}

5. Because it is woven into the exterior in so many ways, it feels like just another part of the deck.

No. The truth is, I don’t think I am ready to jump into pool land. But, don’t you think?

Isn’t this the coolest above ground pool ever?

Would you ever add a pool to your home, despite the maintenance burden?

Did you have Pink and Pretty Barbie Doll?

With all this talk of girl around here, I have let my mind wander back to the days of Pink and Pretty. The days of ruffles and skirts and twirling.

I have been all ruffles and fuchsia and pink and pretty around my home lately. For those who follow me on Instagram, you have been able to see sneaky-peakys of the nursery – here and there. More coming!

Here is another sneaky-peaky, one that I have not shared on Instagram yet:

Pink and Pretty I am in love with the moulding that we added!, and the Farrow and Ball Wall Clunch paint {here’s how I decided!}, accented by the French Ivory WS 8017 Trim color {also on the picture frame moulding}. The dresser belonged to my older sister… from her nursery in the 70’s! We updated it with modern knobs from here.

Now we need some art.

Oh, and a cute baby girl!

So much of my space has been inspired by other beautiful spaces. And not just spaces, but nearly anything girly and pink! And I must admit, I have been a bit heavy on the Pink and Pretty after 8 years as a boy mom!

Do you dare to infuse some Pink and Pretty into your own home?

I have been gathering lots of Pink and Pretty Inspiration. And I definitely recommend scouring images for inspiration when you are about to create a beautiful space.

Kind of like immersing yourself in a character study. Which this singing actress kinda digs.

So, spill it. Did you love Pink and Pretty? Do you still love Pink and Pretty?

July {ditto} DIY link party; plus next month’s project reveal!

{ditto} DIY: Inspired Design For the Rest of Us

Welcome to the July {ditto} DIY challenge!

I hope you loved last month’s challenge! There were some A.MAZ.ING and talented -and simple!- projects that I hope you had a chance to hop around and check out. SUCH Gold goodness!

Today kicks off the grand link-up for July {found at the end of this post}. Do you have your fabric art gorgeousness ready?

For those of you who are just encountering {ditto} DIY for the first time, here is what it is all about: Once a month ten very different bloggers are hosting this challenge to recreate in our own homes a project or design element inspired by a haute couture design. The idea is to inspire everyone to incorporate fine design elements into your own home in a way that fits your own style.

{ditto} DIY: Inspired Design for the Rest of Us

The ten hosting bloggers include:

Darlene @ Fieldstone Hill Design
Ruth @ Living Well Spending Less
Cindy @ Skip to My Lou
Jen @ Balancing Beauty & Bedlam
Edie @ Life in Grace
Rachel @ Surviving the Stores
Karin @ Trophy Mom Diaries
Lauren @ I am THAT Lady
Kelly @ View Along The Way
Melissa @ The Inspired Room

July’s link-up theme is Framed Fabric, and this was our inspiration photograph:

The July {ditto} DIY Challenge:

Frame some Fabric! Any fabric, any way….then use it in a lovely display.

I cannot wait to see all of the awesome framed fabric art {ditto}DIY projects from this great group of bloggers! Be sure to click around and see what they have dreamed up.

AND!! I can’t wait to see what YOU ALL have created. BE SURE TO LINK UP BELOW!!!!!

But first! Now that you have some beautiful, framed fabric in your homes – and a designer art influence – here are some designer tips for incorporating fabric art into your space in classy ways!

Designer Tips

 incorporating fabric art into your home:

1. One of the designer secrets for adding impactful art to a space is using repetition, en masse. Use several art pieces, all the same size, or with all the same frame, in large groupings. This multiplies the impact of your individual art pieces. It is also a fantastic way to have large, grand art … on a budget! I love using a set of 6-8 pieces of art, in matted gold frames {all the same size} and hanging them together as a focal point: Like this.

2. Large art makes a huge impact. And, it is the designer ideal. However, it leaves a huge dent in the pocketbook. So, an amazing solution is framing large, beautiful fabric pieces {especially ones you already have!}, and highlighting them on a large focal wall.

3. Do you have any treasured family heirloom fabric that sits, unappreciated and unnoticed, in a closet? Framing these pieces, and displaying them in a featured spot is a gorgeous solution for your fabric heirloom AND your goal of adding gorgeous art to your home.

4. Any fabric is fair game! Try shadow-box framing a treasured item of clothing. How about a set of four favorite, square designer scarves? Feature them on the same wall! I have a large, embroidered scarf that is in the queue to be framed and featured in our living room. I can’t wait to share this treasured item and enjoy it every day.

Next month (on Monday, August 5th) we are inviting you to join the NEXT {ditto} DIY challenge!:

Announcing the August {ditto} DIY challenge:

August ditto diy July ditto diy

{ditto} DIY

This month’s Inspiration, selected by our interior designer:

Trash receptacles with designer details.

The {ditto} DIY Challenge:

Add a classy pattern to a trash receptacle.

Designer Thoughts:

For obvious reasons, trash cans are an afterthought in our homes. But details make a difference! If you peek into the homes of the finest designers – into their offices especially – you can find beautiful trash receptacles that bring a simple touch of design to this utilitarian piece. I  recommend going with a bold, geometric pattern {although anything is fair game. Design for what you love!}. This type of pattern works well in a variety of rooms and spaces, and a geometric pattern is also great on the surface of a small item {like a small trash can}. Lets have some fun this month and create a gorgeous trash receptacle that we don’t have to hide under the desk!

* * *

Get creative and remember that the small details make a huge impact in your home’s decor.

And then be ready to join in on the Link-up fun August 5th! Your project will be linked up to each and every awesome blogger on the list!

And now comes the fun part! Back to this month’s challenge, and our link-up!

 It is time to link up your own fabulous framed fabric projects and join the {ditto} DIY party! It wouldn’t be much of a party if you didn’t stick around, so be sure to check out as many projects as you can! The link up is for everyone, so if you don’t have a blog, you can still join us over at our Facebook Page and link your project there!
