Happy {ditto} Monday!_peacock

I sat down to write you lovelies a wonderful ditto post for today, and instead, this baby momma really needed to sleep. Soooo….. like any creative genius {ahem.}, I thought, Ah-ha! I will just post a really old ditto over again! And voila, there you have it: RETRO DITTO!  I know, I know – brilliant, you say.

Want to know what is so fun about today’s retro ditto? It is THE FIRST ditto I ever posted here at FHD. Enjoy!!

I love this Plaid inspired boy’s room.

At least, that is how I see it: a room for a young man coming into his own. {Although it would make an amazing guest room as well.}  I am thinking, it would be awesome to pull some of these elements into his room, a bit at a time. You know. To grow things up.

{house beautiful}
Ditto. {what I would steal from this room}:
1. The black lampshades. Easy but bold.
2. The mahogany all-grown-up side table. {hmm. I would probably do one with some storage}
3. The black framed hunting prints.
4. The wool, plaid, brown-color-schemed blanket.
5. I would keep the window treatments unobtrusive and subtle {you can’t exactly go without window treatments in most bedrooms} by adding plantation shutters, or good-quality, white, roll-up shades.
6. The crisp, pure-white sheets with a strong presence. I love how they make an impact with the doubled-up pillows and the bold sheet fold-over.

What would you ditto??

lesson in design :: using original artwork in your home
Saturday, July 27, 2013 by {darlene}

Do you avoid using original artwork in your home because it seems like an intimidating design feat?

You can do it.

I believe there are not really any rules to incorporating gorgeous, real art into your home.

But if you are a rule person, here is the one rule I would like to propose {no surprise here!}:

*** The only rule ***

Pick what you Love! Use it.

Truly. that is it. Really, and truly.

And the fact of the matter is, the greatest designers select pieces that wow them, and find a spot where their goodness can be enjoyed. Then somehow, ‘magically’, everything seems to work and flow together; I believe the reason for this is that when you choose what you love, there is a flow of design.

But if you are hoping for a bit more guidance, here are a few tips for using original artwork in your home:

original artwork

1. Go real. or at least go very close to real.

Not all of the art in our homes can be, or needs to be, original. Prints are also wonderful {especially behind glass}. But, if you can ever purchase an original, real painting…. a real piece of art that you LOVE… DO IT!  It will instantly elevate your interior design, and the original art will bring much joy to your daily life. It is especially wonderful to support an artist you know and/or love, knowing that you have an original piece of art that no one else has.

2. Don’t be afraid to go BIG.

Huge art makes a huge impact. Huge, gorgeous, original art makes a huge, gorgeous, original impact. The end.

3. Hang your art “en masse”

You have heard me talk about this before. But it’s true: hanging lots of smaller art pieces ‘en masse’ is a very affordable way to take affordable original art, and multiply its impact and wall space.

4. Mix up your subject matter {but only if you love it!}

Don’t get stuck in one subject area. “I only like landscapes.” “I only like nudes.” If you verbally limit yourself, you may never open your eyes to other original art gorgeousness; Art gorgeousness that could become a love affair. Keep your options open, and yet, at the end of the day: buy what you love.

5. Find good, accessible, original art

Local colleges, street fairs and flea markets are great places to score original art. I also love that there are now lots of great online resources to help you balance a room with original artwork, and shop from your own living room. For my clients who desire original art {HOORAY!}, I have the most success with Saatchi online and Serena & Lily, but I also use Etsy a lot, and occasionally Buysomedamnart.com, and even less occasionally Artistrising.com.

6. Frame ‘real art’ that you already own

Think outside of the paintbrush, and be willing to frame other types of ‘art,’ such as handcrafted fabric, handmade paper, antique or handmade clothing… anything that is from an era of handcrafted loveliness. Items with texture are particularly wonderful hung as original art.

7. Paint yourself something.

No, seriously. Just give it a try! Or, let your kids do it!! Channel your inner child, and hear the words of your old art teacher telling you to just let-it-go. Have fun with your favorite colors. Can’t find your inner child? Be sure to read Angela’s post. Next thing you know, you will be creating masterpieces.

Using original artwork in your home is worth the effort. It will transform your rooms, and elevate your interiors.

Bébé bébé bébé Nursery

Bebe bebe bebe nursery series

{preggers update: In the final countdown. 6 weeks left! 6 weeks!!!!!}

Thursdays is the day for the Bébé bébé bébé Nursery series here at FHD: featuring Girl Nurseries designed by some of the most gifted designers and creative decor bloggers from around the web. {Need some boy nursery awesomeness? Check out Bijou and Boheme‘s Baby Baby Baby Nursery series.}

Today’s talented designer is Naomi of Little Crown Interiors, an amazing design firm based in California. If you would like to SERIOUSLY ooh and ahh over some fantastic nursery designs, you must check out their portfolio! When it comes to gorgeous nurseries, these girls are not messing around! I love their glam take on child spaces. And of course, glam and GIRL nurseries mix beautifully!!! Just wait until you see this space!

* * *

We’ve been watching Darlene’s Bebe Bebe Bebe Nursery features each week and love everything we see!  So when we were asked to create a design board for the series, we were beyond thrilled.  Design a nursery?  That’s what we do!  One of our favorite things to do when designing a nursery is to go bold, but in the right places.  We decided to go with a feminine yet vivid color scheme of light coral, cobalt blue, light blue and hot pink.  The walls and furniture are in the softer colors, and the accents pump up the drama, like the fabulous floral area rug. Another of our favorites slipped into this design as well – acrylic accents.  The curtain rod and finials are acrylic, as are the side table and the amazing chandelier.  The accessories have a touch of Chinoiserie, balancing the more modern pieces.  We just love this space!

Okay, seriously?? I am SO IN LOVE LOVE LOVE with this nursery!!! You know how much I love contrasts, so the play on blue and pink in this space is just GENIUS!! The designers guild rug caught my attention immediately, and I had to check it out immediately! Another fave is the chair and ottoman in the perfect candy pink velvet. PLUS, I am a sucker for chinoiserie! I love the geometric feel and the delicate details. Check out how the blue chinoiserie mirror is brought into symmetrical heaven via the blue window frame across the room! And finally, I love the confident pop of yellow from the table lamp that plays with the rose in the carpet. YES!

Thank you SO much, Naomi, for creating this To-die-for nursery for my baby girl!! This room is a complete stunner, and I wish I was moving in tomorrow!!!

I am having so much fun with this series. What fun to be planning a nursery in a time when the choices are endless, gorgeous and flexible!  My girl’s design board may be done already, but the GORGEOUS ideas just keep coming! Thank you to all you amazing gals for such great designs.

Be sure to leave some comment love here for Naomi, sharing your thoughts on this beautifully designed space!

What elements from this design would you use in your own home??

Dining Room Dreaming

{don’t forget to enter the HUGE Summer Memories Giveaway, with over 900+ in awesome prizes!}

Our dining room at Fieldstone Hill is our main eating area, and is very very used and lived in. I dream of knocking down more of the stone wall that separates our dining room from our kitchen. But all in due time!

Either way, I believe dining rooms should be

1. USED

2. Comfortable

3. Lovely, of course

I also don’t happen to believe in having a formal dining room for show. I think it is a thing of the past, and it sure is a shame and a waste to have to dust something you use once a year. {Wondering more? You must snag this awesome book by Susan Susanka}.

* * *

A little bit of high-gloss glamour.

A little bit of farmhouse simplicity.

That is the dining room I long for.

Have fun dining room dreaming:

What is your philosophy about the dining room?
