ditto-worthy tour :: Elizabeth Bauer’s studio apartment

Happy {ditto} Monday!_peacock

Well hello lovely folks. Happy ditto Monday. Hmmm, I think I am in the mood to snoop around someone else’s space today. How about a ditto-worthy home tour of Elizabeth Bauer’s studio apartment?

{**Down-to-earth update from the Pregnant Wonder of Fieldstone Hill: Two weeks until my due date, people! Two weeks!! My goodness. This makes for lots of slow moving and plenty of napping. As I was chatting about in this post about shifting focus, it is really amazing how your focus changes when you are expecting a little one. My last 2 years, I got to experience a new ‘freedom’ as my boys grew more independent. But, with God’s help, I am turning my heart back toward home as we await the arrival of a sweet baby girl. I am finding it really hard to crank out posts {as in: I don’t want to. haha! If it wasn’t for all of these design thoughts spinning through my head!}… my heart’s desire is to nest up my home, finish up client projects, wash baby clothes, and love on my boys in extra doses. Oh, and sleep. I feel like I am right where I am supposed to be. And that feels lovely. Sometimes I get a twinge, like I am “missing something” with my awesome blogging buds {love you people!!}, whose friendships are a treasure and a blessing to me. But, this twinge is far more bearable than the twinge of “missing something” in my own precious home. So, in toward home I turn.
& One more note from the Pregnant Wonder: As of today, I have temporarily  closed all of my design services to new clients. I will be up and running with abbreviated services once our mobile finds its new balance. Until we meet again! I cannot wait to help you add beauty to your homes!}

Now. Onto to some light-hearted design ogling. Perfect way to start the week!

This ditto-worthy tour features a VERY smartly designed NYC studio apartment by Elizabeth Bauer.

It was featured back in the day, in Lonny June/July 2010 {images by Patrick Cline}, and I have never featured it here at FHD. It is definitely worth of our attention, with TONS of ditto-worthy design tricks that could inspire you to make the most of ANY small space – from a small room to a studio apartment.

Ditto Worthy Tour

Elizabeth Bauer’s NYC studio apartment

ditto:

1// I wonder if she added that small step-up into the bedroom area. Perfect space-dividing trick!

2// A see-thru screen divides the space, not the light

3// a HUGE mirror adds the illusion of size and bounces extra light around the space

4// And don’t miss how she took the wallpaper around to the ceiling, creating her own border {rule breaker! LOVE it!}

Elizabeth Bauer studio apartment 4 ditto:

1// a small, round, glass table lets light pass through and has an airy quality that won’t weigh down a studio apartment

2// paint it white. Again, this keeps things from getting heavy in such a small space.

3// by using a very small round table, the air continues to move around the furnishings. While pushing a small square table up to the wall might seem to make more sense, the eye actually loves not getting trapped, and the space feels larger.
Elizabeth Bauer studio apartment 3

ditto:

1// gutsy wallpaper defines the bedroom area, and makes the bedroom space a bit cozier than the rest of the space. Even a cozy/small space can benefit from more cozying, if done well.

2// coral lamps flank the bed. Not hard-wired, this is a great solution in a rental space. And the more light the better, no matter the size of your home!

Elizabeth Bauer studio apartment 2

ditto:

1// double stack your art using horizontal pieces, for a creative arrangement above a sofa, and to draw the eye upward. This creates the illusion of height.

2// don’t be afraid of an awesome, colorful vintage sofa. It could completely rock your space if you add great pillows and a throw that highlight the pattern’s best features. Loud pattern CAN work in a small space if balanced well.

3// I love that chartreuse horse lamps! An eye-catcher that can be enjoyed from both sides of the room-dividing screen.

Elizabeth Bauer sa1

ditto:

1// lacquer. color. and chinoiserie goodness. Oh, look: another mirror!

2// somehow, when you add wide gilded frames to anything, they can become AMAZING! Good art gives the eye a place to rest.

3// um. those lucite kryptonite lamps rock my world!

Elizabeth Bauer sa

ditto:

1// a well decorated bookshelf…. with books {head here for my bookshelf styling tips}!

EB studio apartment.tiff

ditto:

1// one must have gorgeous flowers. The end.

2// a well-decorated table display {great display ideas here}, on lucite, of course! The lucite is yet another example of furnishings that allow the eye to move around the space.

EB studio apartment 2.tiff

ditto:

1// paper doll wallpaper is perfect for the fashionista lover. I love how busy pattern is used in this small corner.

2// a full length mirror and a lacquered vanity add reflection and shine to a teeny dressing space.

overcoming decorating paralysis :: dress up your ugly duckling
Friday, August 16, 2013 by {darlene}

Sometimes {often!}, money and time do not allow for changes in our home decorating.

Should this paralyze us? Should we live surrounded by ugly duckling things that make us frown? NO! I say! No we shall not!

Instead, we shall get creative, by golly.

 {this post is part of my Overcoming Decorating Paralysis series}

ugly duckling

I have an ugly duckling in my home: My dining room table and chairs:

ugly duckling Not my style. But a solid hand-me-down nonetheless. We have had this set for 13 years.

Now, I have always appreciated her for her value: Free. War-horse. Indestructible. Child-friendly. Filled with a lovely past {my husband ate at this table as a wee one}. Hailing from the 70’s. Good solid foundation and roots.

But you know about me and my visions: How about a Farmhouse Simplicity pine farm-table for 10, with dramatic High-Gloss Glamour chairs surrounding her?  THAT is more what I have had in mind for Fieldstone Hill.

About a year ago, the chairs went to the curb with a sign that read “FREE.”  And, I scored another set of 6 on Craigslist for $50. They have gorgeous Louis lines that I love, and good bones. But they had rattan caned backs. Boys and caning do not mix, people. So, Sadly these are now ugly ducklings as well. But ugly ducklings with hope, I tell ya.

ugly duckling

Torn up chairs, and a faux wood plastic-coated table??

So what do I do with these ugly ducklings?

How to overcome the paralysis of an ugly duckling:

1. I dress them up.

When you dress up an ugly duckling, dress it up with something VERY LOVELY! But also, do not make a big investment. The goal is to be able to save up to change out the ugly duckling someday.

ugly duckling table top

My faux wood table needs all the help it can get, but I have to stay realistic with two young boys in the house. So I chose simple, washable cotton placemats in a gorgeous green for my base layer. Then, I had fun with some simple plate layering: hand-thrown pottery favorites on the bottom, and everyday luxury plates from Villeroy and Boch on top. Those little orange plates make me so happy! Top it off with washable napkins and lucite {read: non-breakable} napkin rings, and it is so pretty. One barely notices the tabletop surface.

2. I don’t apologize for them.

{okay well, sometimes I apologize for the chairs. But that is only when a small child falls through the back of them…}

Everyone has an ugly duckling or two in their homes. We always think that people notice the “eye-sores” in our homes first. But the truth is, most guests take in the overall feel of our home. That is the first reason not to apologize. Why draw attention to what was going unnoticed anyway?

The second reason not to apologize is that it really is not all that important in the scheme of things. I may have, what I think is, an ugly table. But, I am thankful that I have a table. The end.

{a view of our table through the back of our very broken chair. Thanks to a very cute 5 year old}:

3. I make sensible plans to change my ugly ducklings into swans.

I don’t have to live with my ugly ducklings forever. I simply don’t. With discipline and creativity:

1. I could save up the funds needed to replace the duckling.
2. I could recover the ducklings in swans clothing, if the bones are good.
3. I could DIY myself a new duckling.

Yes, now we are talking time and money. But, eventually, we should make the effort to replace things in our homes that we truly do not love.

Eventually, for my chairs, I am thinking more like this, but with gold leather {for more inspiration pics, click here}:

{if you follow me on Instagram you may have seen the good news that I just sent my dining room chairs off to the upholsterer! Hooray. After living with no backs on half of our chairs for a year}:

And for my table, more like this:

Meanwhile, when I am waiting for “someday” with these ugly ducklings, I am bound and determined to enjoy every square inch of my home. I will dress it up, and wear it out, and laugh in it, and enjoy it, and fill it to the brim with memories.

Someday, when that table is carried away, you had better believe I will miss it.

Because it will be filled to the brim with life, and the sweet stuff of life that goes with it.

Tell me about your Ugly Ducklings. How can you dress it up… today even?

Bébé bébé bébé Nursery :: Sherry Hart of Design Indulgence

Bébé bébé bébé Nursery

Bebe bebe bebe nursery series

{preggers update: Can you even believe it? 3 weeks left! Folks, I look like a house. Yes, indeed.}

Thursdays is the day for the Bébé bébé bébé Nursery series here at FHD: featuring Girl Nurseries designed by some of the most gifted designers and creative decor bloggers from around the web. {Need some boy nursery awesomeness? Check out Bijou and Boheme‘s Baby Baby Baby Nursery series.}

Today’s designer is the very fun and very talented Sherry Hart of Design Indulgence and Sherry Hart Interiors. I had so much fun last year when Sherry, Erika Ward, and I were on the interior designer panel at the Haven Conference. Two undeniable things about Sherry: she is VERY talented at pulling together serene spaces… meanwhile, that woman is full of more spunk than is even reasonable! LOVE her! And if you have ever read her blog, you will know what I mean. Without further ado…. I cannot wait to share Sherry’s {or Sherika, or Shacranky, or whatever she is calling herself today!} Bébé bébé bébé Nursery eDesign with you!!

* * *

Thank you, Darlene, for asking me to be apart of the Bebe Designing nursery series!

Although I am sure there are things in here that are probably huge “no no’s” for a baby space….it is after all make-believe right?

As far as dirty diapers and such….well I just left all that crazy stuff out.

I decided to stay gender neutral…and as far as I am concerned I could take out the crib and be very happy in this room myself:)

Paint colors are all Benjamin Moore:

Now seriously. Does it get any more serene than that? The cooling neutrals and soothing slate tones are enough to soothe baby right to sleep {I am all for that!}… or at the very least, to put momma to sleep! And we all will be needing plenty more sleep around here, in oh, say 3 weeks-ish.

So many things to love in this space. Number one for me is how simple and sophisticated this room is, meaning it could easily grow up with little baby girl! I am also completely adoring the silver rug, the gorgeous wooden quatrefoil chandelier, and the gray bedding. Hooray for gray bedding in a nursery – love that idea! Add some greek key curtains, my fave Kendall Charcoal paint, and a cow print pillow, and that is a happy, lovely space.

Thank you so much, Sherry! I love this soothing nursery design!

* * *

I am having so much fun with this series. You will definitely want to check out all of the amazing designs to be endlessly inspired. What fun to be planning a nursery in a time when the choices are endless, gorgeous and flexible!  My girl’s design board may be done already, but the GORGEOUS ideas just keep coming! Thank you to all you amazing gals for such great designs.

Be sure to leave some comment love here for Sherry, sharing your thoughts on this beautifully designed space!

What elements from this design would you use in your own home??

ditto | a room I love :: a small library, perfect for snuggling
Monday, August 12, 2013 by {darlene}

Today’s ditto | a room I love* post features one of my favorite kind of rooms: Small but savvy! This small library is filled with brilliant ideas and snuggle-inducing choices. I love to see when a room makes the most of every inch and feels fabulous. Let’s break down what makes it SO awesome, so we can ditto a space like this in our own homes.

*{Ditto | Room I Love posts demonstrate a great exercise for you as you continue to develop your own personal style: using your own favorite pictures, and making a quick list of what you actually love about the space. If you study what you love about a space, it helps you to bring what you LOVE into your own home!}

This is a room I love. Do you love it?:

small library  {via Houzz}

WHAT I LOVE {What I would ditto!}:

1. A light at the end of the tunnel. Much can be said of a narrow space if it does not feel hemmed in. The window at the end of this space is just the ticket.

2. Built-ins, of course! I am a total sucker for built-ins {have an ENTIRE Pinterest board devoted to my built-in love, in case you need a few zillion ideas}, and I happen to be all about built-in bookshelves at the moment!

3. Simple, comfy seating for two. With a place to put up your feet! In my home, I would want these two chairs to snuggle up to each other a little more…

4. This room centers around the fireplace. Which is ever so enticing for book reading!

5. The gorgeous “destination desk” at the end of the room.

6. The geometric play with black and whites in the rug and the curtains. And NOT the same pattern.

7. Speaking of black and white, I love thee, you cute and large penguin painting!

8. Lighting above the bookshelves – a definite YES.

9. The concept of ottomans is brilliant in this space, because it allows seating to be pulled right up to the fire!

DO YOU LOVE THIS SPACE??

WHAT DO YOU LOVE?

WHAT DESIGN ELEMENTS WOULD YOU DITTO and BRING INTO YOUR OWN HOME? DO TELL!!!!!!
