One of my favorite-est friends in all of blogland is the lovely Melissa Michaels. I actually met her on the day my very first post here at Fieldstone Hill Design went live. We sat together 5 years ago at the Allume conference (formerly called Relevant), and became instant friends. She is a genuine spirit with a heart of gold, and you probably know her already because her blog is wildly popular and award winning: The Inspired Room. Now, she is an author to 2 books, and we will undoubtedly be hearing more and more from this wonderful, encouraging author.
I have, in my hot little hands, an advance copy of The Inspired Room, Melissa’s gorgeous coffee table book with “Simple Ideas to Love the Home You Have.” The first thing that is ‘inspired’ is the cover of this book! It is so very pretty. Which, ya know, is kind of an important feature in a coffee table book.
Along with the book came a fun invitation to share an “Inspired Room” in my own home (and stay tuned! You get to play along too!).
A little secret about me: I don’t really like to read much. Ignoring the fact that I have read Gone with the Wind three times, I NEVER finish a book. Which is why the Coffee table book was meant for me.
Melissa’s book is like a collection of very inspiring yet QUICK reads. The book can easily be digested one cup of coffee at a time. Thank you, Melissa. You are the hands and feet of an angel to this momma with ADD tendencies who happens to love decorating books.
All that to say, I poured over some sections of Melissa’s gorgeous book, and my favorite little sections in the book are those called “Keeping it Real.” In these little snippets, Melissa will share a true story of her own decorating mishaps and stumbles. So in the spirit of keeping it real, I thought I would share 3 pics of beloved rooms in our home… and the real decorating funnies, fails and mishaps that accompanied them:
{Our daughter’s beloved nursery}
Keeping it Real:
The Peruvian costume is held to the wall by duct tape. So are all of the bases of the curtains, so they will stay put.
{our family living room}
Keeping it Real:
The cowhide rug covers the spot where I hot-glued two rugs together (yes, I really need to post about that!). The coffee table books are strategically placed to cover huge scratches in our coffee table. And those frames (which are now filled) were empty because of a project I procrastinated on for two whole years.
{our entry way}
Keeping it Real:
Hiding lots of things here. The chairs have a hideous upholstery of vinyl, which is falling apart (hence, how I got them for $25 for the pair). So, they are currently covered in sheepskin throws. Also, the ottoman in the middle may have THE ugliest fabric known to man, so it is covered in a shawl that I used to enjoy wearing. Now my ottoman wears it. The umbrella stand contains no cute umbrellas: only ugly little purse-sized umbrellas, a few matchbox cars, some trash, and without-a-doubt, some cheese-itz crackers.
Join Melissa in keeping it real. First of all, I know your home and your coffee table will love you for pre-ordering her book. Be the first one to get your hands on this beauty.
Secondly, I hope you will join all us in sharing our Inspired Rooms! See the pic below and head here for details.
