client spaces :: an English Inspired before and after
Monday, January 6, 2014 by {darlene}

I am excited to share some “almost finished” pics from a client project. Maybe you know her already from her graceful presence in blogland? Her name is Richella and she blogs at Imparting Grace.

It was wonderful to work with Richella. First of all, she is so kindhearted. If you have ever had the pleasure of getting a blog comment from her, you know exactly what I mean. Richella had a very clear vision of her style, and some very specific needs for comfort for her family. It was also very important to her that her room connect to the rest of her house well.

Interestingly enough, Richella’s personal style is very different from mine. She has a love for the traditional, and she describes herself as a hopeless Anglophile who loves the English influence in decor. As you likely know, I am a HUGE believer in decorating for YOUR OWN personal style, and not trying to fit into someone else’s mold. That said, as her designer with a bit of a different style, I never selected a single piece that I did not find to be lovely, and we worked with several inspiration pictures to find ones that we both felt were livable, beautiful and fresh. I love the result!!

BEFORE:

Here are  pictures of Richella’s space before:

After working with Richella one on one regarding her needs, wants, and dreams for this space, I crafted this design board for her:

THE DESIGN:

Fieldstone Hill Design, RichellaP Living Room Design Board_web

We used several items that Richella already had, and repurposed them. The wingback chairs got new fabric, the ottomans were a Target find that Richella recovered in an aquamarine geometric I found. The sideboard is a favorite piece of hers that we used again, but I modernized it with a lighter, fresher mirror. And the painting above the mantle is a favorite of Richella’s as well, so I used it for color inspiration and we kept it front and center.

The bookshelves got a coat of paint on the interior shelving to connect the space to her dining room, and we simplified the decor with a large platter at the top of each bookshelf to make for a bolder look against the blue. I also simplified the wall of crosses with symmetrical botanical artwork to allow that side of the room to breathe a bit more and make a statement – this helped bring attention to the sideboard that Richella loves.

One of the big changes in this room was layout. We used two large leather chesterfields and I created the floor plan so that the sofas could face each other, one of my favorite looks. This gave all the guys (a tall hubby and 3 tall sons) a comfy place to sit. I love that!

I am thrilled with the new feel this nearly-finished living room already has!

As you can see, we really brightened up her space and adding some luxurious seating. And although we added larger furnishings, we created more breathing room and visual symmetry to let the eye ‘rest.’ We are both so happy with the results!

The one finishing touch that will really MAKE this room is when Richella adds a set of eight pieces of art on the sideboard side of the room. I have given her the recommendation that whatever she finally chooses there, whether she goes with my selection or not, she should attempt to pull out colors from her gorgeous floral oil painting, and use them in this art as well to connect both sides of the space.

You know what I think about drapes and why they are SO wonderful for your decor! One recommendation that did not work for this client  (because of her pup-dogs), that I would have loved to see in this room are light and breezy drapes from ceiling to floor. Possibly these gorgeous drapes in Ivory from Serena and Lily.

Thank you, Richella, for blogging about your experience in working with me and the eDesign process in general! And thank you for being a delight to work with. I hope this room will bless you and your family for many years!

2013 moments: a life-changing year
Tuesday, December 31, 2013 by {darlene}

This year was life changing for me. I can barely wrap my mind around it. But, what good therapy it is to look back over a year… and breathe deeply at God’s good work in my life.

January

What a way to start the year! This was one of the most thrilling things that has happened to me… a dream came true that I had not even dared to dream: FHD interiors were showcased as the feature design article in the January 2013 Issue of Better Homes and Gardens:

FHD-in-BHG

You all had a blast, and I did too, joining in on creating a Signature Style Board, which was then featured on our Pinterest Board, “Your Signature Style Boards.” If you did not get a chance to do this, I really encourage you to do so. It is a very helpful exercise on honing in on your own personal style loves!

I shared a very personal post about my ‘decision’ to have a third child. Your comments on this post meant the WORLD to me. Many of my ‘fears’ are indeed coming true… I have had to let go of much of my own dreams for the time being. But that is SO temporary. What I am gaining is MUCH, much more. I love you, Georgia Luisa.

December

My family and I took a very special, very relaxing vacation that truly helped us to reconnect after the big change of adding a baby to our family. And while I was there, I visited some friends that are simply a PURE TREASURE to me! And, as true friends do, they taught me a thing or two:

And, full circle to my year, I ended 2013 with a very special visit to a very special home… Edie’s. To see my own designs, in person, for the first time was a truly joyous experience:

This year truly was life changing for me. My moments swung me from humbling, national recognition in Better Homes and Gardens, to precious, quiet, unrecognized moments caring for a small infant. I will never forget this year, and all that was birthed.

I would be remiss if I did not mention one of the most special things in my life: YOU. The community here at Fieldstone Hill Design blesses me daily. Thank you for joining me in this journey of Living with Beauty. I am SO VERY thankful for you.

Happy New Year!!!

A fire. A flame. Your love. {How you can help and a free printable}
Monday, December 30, 2013 by {darlene}

A Fire.

Many of you know me because you first found me through my wonderful friend Edie.

Just before Christmas, three years ago, Edie lost her home and all of her belongings in a devastating house fire. After the devastation, I had the joy of  collaborating with Edie in rebuilding and redecorating her home, and filling it with beauty.

And of course, I thought of Edie’s journey immediately when I heard about my good friend Marion.

Just a few days ago, on Christmas Eve no less, her home suffered a devastating house fire that has left them without a home, without nearly all of their belongings, and with a long road ahead of rebuilding. Praise be to God, no one was harmed. Even their pets were saved… dog, cat, geese and chickens and all. {Their awesome neighbor lassoed !!!! the panicking dog to save him, and hand-tackled the geese to bring them to her home. Is that stinkin’ awesome or what?}

Here are some images taken that night as the firefighters selflessly battled this dangerous fire:

Fire York Daily Record 2 Fire York Daily Record Fire YDR Marion {images via}

And the Christmas Day aftermath. They believe a small spark from inside the chimney started the blaze, the spark originating from a regular fireplace fire they had enjoyed 24 hours earlier:

Fire 2

Marion has a precious family. Four boys! This was their dream home, an old homestead with running-space for boys filled with energy, and they had just moved in a few months ago. One of their immediate challenges, other than figuring out where they will live as they rebuild, is the fact that they homeschool, and all of their schoolbooks… as well as their “school house,” was destroyed.

Raub's

A Flame.

Our family was able to stop by on Saturday with some necessities for their family, and there were a few things inside the house that struck me to the core.

The first was this scene:

Marion fire chair_edited-1 because it instantly reminded me of this:

turquoise chair

{image via Life In Grace, and this story}

Single chairs, left standing. Giving hope for the rebuilding.

And then there was this. Their Bible and Advent devotional, unburned but frozen in smoke-water:

bible in fire

There are fires that destroy. And then their are flames that give light. Marion’s family shines Light. They have lost a lot, but they had Hope before the fire, and they still have it after the fire. Their Hope is unchanging… and when the flames ravage, there is pain, but there is not utter destruction.

Hanging in the hallway of Edie’s home is a very special verse. It reminds her of the joy after coming through the flames with the help of the Lord. My husband and I were able to pray this verse with Marion’s family on Saturday, but this promise belongs to all of us whose Hope is in the Lord.

I crafted this printable for Marion, for me, for Edie, for all of us…

Your Love:

Time and time again, I have seen bloggers and blog readers rally together to help others. Because Blogland is one of the most generous places on all the earth,

I want to ask for your help, dear one. Let’s bless Marion and her family!

My amazing friend Carey has a handcrafted, soy candle business, This Little Light of Mine, that also serves as a fundraiser opportunity. A whopping 40% of the candle sales go to helping various fundraisers. Her candles are now the only candles that I buy… they truly are delicious and pure. I keep extras on hand in my own home so that I am always prepared with a gracious, luxurious and affordable hostess gift for those last-minute invites. So, I reached out to her right away to see how WE ALL can help Marion’s family.

Won’t you consider purchasing a “Little Light” candle, or several, to help the Raub family? 40% of your purchase will go straight to the Raubs to help with immediate expenses.

Here are the details:

Go to OurLittleLightCandles.com and 40% of any and all ‘little light’ soy candle sales will be donated to the Raub family.  10% of all the other candle lines (‘just be’, ‘just unWINEd’, etc) will also be donated.  Please use code: HELPRAUB.

Packages will be mailed the week of January 20th for those who choose shipping. If you are local friends of Marion, Carey or Darlene, please contact Darlene at fieldstonehill@gmail.com for details on how to pick up your candles.

Special pricing:  For anyone who purchases 5 candles you will receive a free 8oz little light.  Just list the scent you would like in the notes section.

If you are having trouble deciding between all the awesome scents, here are my own favorites:

Little-Lights

Some of my favorite Little Lights (40% donated): Carrot Cake, Coconut Lime Verbena, Peony, Baby Powder, Creamy Coconut, Golden Rose, and Eucalyptus Spearmint. CODE: HELPRAUB

Just-Be-Candles

My favorite Just Be candles (10% donated): Just Be Peaceful and Just Be Protected. CODE: HELPRAUB

As an alternative, another way to help the Raub’s is to give a monetary donation. You can do this by heading to this You Caring site to donate toward their family’s immediate needs.

Thank you for blessing someone you likely do not even know!

Thank you for being a Light in the World by helping the Raub Family!!!

Inspired To:

flaunt some radiant orchid

{* Oh, how I hope all of you had a joyous, magical, blessed Christmas. Ours was wonderful, from PJ’s in the AM until bedtime again! It was so special celebrating our first family Christmas as a family of five. My heart is full after celebrating the birth of our Savior. Much love to all of you, this special time of year.}

INSPIRED TO ::

  • flaunt some radiant orchid. Can you even handle the gorgeousness?
  • throw on something fluffy, or furry… in radiant orchid.
  • Why Radiant Orchid you say? Have you heard yet?
  • Wear some fabulousness. With guts. Like I mean it.
  • Like in outfit #2, combine some gorgeous orchid with my beloved orange. I am completely gaga over this contrasting combo. The sparkle does not hurt, of course!
  • Outfit #1 is so fabulous, I don’t know where to begin. It leans more toward Mauve-ulous, but there is some gorgeous Orchid action going on. That coat. Oh my! And the skirt. I think I am inspired to copy this entire outfit to the best of my abilities!
  • go for some high collars.
  • embellish a fabulous, swinging, A-line skirt.
  • Be bold with color in my design. If I love the color…. then GO for it!

So. What does this picture inspire you to do/feel/create/think…… I would love to know!

What are you Inspired To?
