5 feminine {easy} touches to add to your home and style
Monday, January 27, 2014 by {darlene}

Having a girl has been so. much. fun. I cannot believe how “pink” my life has become! … and fuchsia.

I absolutely loved being a boy-only mom, and despite my passionate affection for most things girly, I was afraid of having a girl… that I wouldn’t know what to do or how to be girly with my girly… Oh, boy {no pun intended}, was I wrong. Give me all things pink and fuchsia and lavender and such, I say!!!!! And wrap them up in a satin bow. I am a bit taken aback by my newfound love for the girly goods.

Even Valentines Day is looking especially lovely in its Impending Pink-Ness this year {my hubby and I are long time Valentine’s Scrooges}. And I am slowly but surely adding sweet feminine touches to my home, now that this room has thrown me over the edge in to girly-ville and I can’t deny the influence that my friend Christine and her stunning home has had on me. So, in honor of my insane girly streak – which I am thinking might just stick – I give you:

5 feminine touches

5 Feminine {& Easy} touches to add to your Home and Style

There are varying degrees to which we can add the feminine touch to our homes, all out or just a bit. Below is a list of my favorite ways to keep the girl in the decor. Add as much or as little as tickles your fancy!

1. Flowers

A lot or a little, when it comes to making interiors beautiful, don’t forget to add flowers!

They can add the icing on top of an already feminine space:

Or they can soften a more masculine space:

{image via architectural digest}

{money saving decorating tips for incorporating flowers: 1. don’t forget about the foliage in your own yard, which is good for the cutting. 2. Plant a cutting garden specifically for filling your home with flowers. 3. Seek out low cost floral options at the grocery store or street corner. I love baby’s breath {very cheap} when it is displayed all by itself.}

2. Pink

There is no other color more associated with girl-ness than pink.

Try bringing just a splash of this fun color into your home:

or you might even have the guts to go over-the-top pink!:

Do you have any young girls that could use a bit more pink and feminine touch?:

{money saving decorating tips for adding color: 1. To save money long term, don’t commit your large furniture pieces to pink. Just throw in a fun pink pillow. 2. Check discount clothing stores for gorgeous scarves. They can replace the look of a throw when tossed over a sofa or chair. I have a gorgeous one in fuchsia that I love to use around my home.}

3. Sparkle

Sparkle is the fun side of femininity! Every home can stand to have some sparkle in it!

Pillows are great ways to bring in some shimmer:

My favorite way to add sparkle to a home is by adding a chandelier:

{money saving decorating tip for getting the chandy of your dreams: Don’t pay retail! Our chandelier {above} was purchased from a store called “Good Used Furniture” in the middle of the small-town Midwest. When we purchased it, the shop owner even threw in 2 chairs we were looking at! Never say never – I thought I could never afford a chandelier!}

4. Frill

Frill is the ultimate feminine touch. There are lots of ways to add some frill to your home.

Lacey:

Pom-Poms:

Tulle:

{money saving decorating tip: lace, tulle, and pom-poms can all be integrated into your homes via fun and easy DIY projects. Hop over to Pinterest and do a search, and you will find amazing blog posts all over the web that help you add feminine frill to your homes for a fraction!}

5. A throne for m’lady

The lady of the house should have her throne. Do you have a sitting nook that is all your own, or a special place to sip your cup of coffee?

In this design that I did for my client Edie, we had so much fun picking out “her” chair, that we could not decide, and had to put 2 choices into the design. Here are options one {turquoise} and two {yellow zebra stripe}:

{design board images via fieldstone hill design, design by darlene weir}

And then, we added a “throne”  in her all-purpose workroom that houses her desk, a homeschooling space, and a laundry room. The chair really steals the show, and also hints at who keeps this family a-ticking!

Have you ever thought of having a “throne” of your own?

{money saving decorating tipMy own throne cost only $30! Don’t let money be an obstacle. Get creative {and patient} when it comes to making your home comfortable and beautiful.}

I would love to know! What ways are you inspired to add a feminine touch into your home?

Your Un-word 2014 Link Party #unword2-14
Tuesday, January 21, 2014 by {darlene}

Today is the day!

#unword2014

Well. I have officially made it through my first week with my Un-word fresh in my mind. And also, fresh in my husband’s mind. Which happens to come in handy. He kept me on my toes.

I reject you, “Guilt.”

So, we were both on high alert for editing the words “I feel bad…..” OUT of my vocabulary.

Not gonna lie. This was particularly hard with the kids, since I never feel like I give them enough of me. Anyone else? Not to mention, over-commitments. And then, there is slew of activities we participate in… they are always asking for more more more. And I just so happen to be in a season where I cannot volunteer for one more thing.

But it really did make a difference to be mindful of the Little Engine Who Hated Herself. I have had it with this “I feel bad. I feel bad. I feel bad” business. It’s reign over me shall end.

Unword2014 Fieldstone Hill Design

The time for the Un-word has arrived!! So many things are going to come to an end. Things that need to be pruned from our lives. Things that need to be Un-worded and UnFriended: Did you read about Angela’s word? Edie’s word? Nester’s word? Some amazingly GOOD stuff.

I don’t want to take on more. Instead, it is time to LET SOME THINGS GO. And I am so, so glad we are banding together on this one.

What is YOUR Un-Word? What are YOU saying Goodbye to this year??? I can’t wait to find out. Be sure to Link up below, or if you are not a blogger, please leave a comment below!

Stinkin’ adorable Georgia Lu, Sneaky Peeky Nursery, and Un-wording
Monday, January 20, 2014 by {darlene}

I cannot even pretend subtle humility in this post:

I have the cutest baby in the entire world!!!

This girl is just slaying me with her cuteness. I mean, COME ON:

Fieldstone Hill Design photo 2 photo 3 photo 4

You’re welcome.

And in other news, I have officially made all purchases for #projectnursery, put some finishing-goodness in that space, and today {!!} I am getting some professional pics taken. It will still be a little while before I get to share it {sorry!}, because I am sharing the room with some magazine friends first, but I promise…. you WILL get to see this room – “soon-ish.”

Does it make you feel better to know that I just got to see it finished myself, for the first time, yesterday??

Funny how having a little thing like a newborn will slow down your decorating plans. {wink} I took a few closeups, and thought I would share them with you today. Some have made their debut on my Instagram before, but others are new – and it is fun to see them together here:

I am just loving this space, y’all. And I can’t wait to share the big-picture with you!

If you are new here, or don’t follow along, I would be honored if you would join my daily journey toward “Living with Beauty.” Plus..  the nursery reveal is coming soon! I could just squeal! Sign up for email updates here.

And.

Last but not least!!

Don’t forget that TOMORROW is the big link up for your Un-word 2014 #unword2014 !!! What is an Un-word, you ask? Well, check out my post on the matter, and read about my own Un-word. Then, declare your own Un-word to the world and link it up tomorrow! You can link up at any of the four hosting blogs: Fieldstone Hill Design {hello!}, Nesting Place, Life in Grace, and The Painted House.

#unword2014

Wait. Actually.

THIS is last but not least:

My favorite quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.” {Isaiah 40:4-5}

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.”

Have a beautiful day, fine people! See you back tomorrow, where we will declare freedom from our Un-words!

Our minds can be traps. What better place to be set free, than from the prisons we set for ourselves in our own minds?

Let us be free indeed. Starting with one little word.

recipe :: Kale and Chicken “Survival” Salad {whole food, grain free & more}
Friday, January 17, 2014 by {darlene}

Kale and Chicken “Survival” Salad

The following Whole Food recipe is EASY, delicious and filling,
and is also gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, grain-free, soy-free, egg-free!

kale and chicken

Living with beauty has the glorious potential to infiltrate every area of our life. I am not talking about just surface beauty, but beauty that has meaning and beauty that benefits our lives for the long haul.

This includes our attitude toward our health and our bodies. We should Live with Beauty when it comes to our bodies. We should live with an aim toward Wellness.  And although I often fail at my daily goal of eating healthy foods and getting good exercise, this is a goal that will never leave my life. It is not about being on a diet all of the time, but about knowing what is actually good for our bodies, and then aiming toward health.

Living with Beauty button-whole food eating

The following recipe is what I call my “Survival Salad.” It is named as such because it has helped me to survive every dietary restriction I have ever had. It is NOT a wimpy salad that will leave you hungry and pitiful. And it is super easy to make and keep on hand in the fridge. That is a win in my book.

Dietary restrictions, you ask? Like right now, for example. Georgia Luisa has had tummy issues. Sooo… for 4 months I have been off of dairy, gluten, soy and eggs {this is hard, people!}. And, thank goodness for Survival Salad – it is practical to whip up, even if you have a newborn. Or my restrictions from a few years ago, when I finally discovered that the SCD diet helped me heal my own tummy troubles, the Survival Salad still was a go! In fact, it was during this season that I first whipped up this awesome salad.

So, unless you are allergic to chicken or kale {or nuts, but those could easily be left out, just up the salt a bit}, I think this could be a go-to Survival Salad for you too!

Kale and Chicken Survival Salad, whole food, gluten free, via Fieldstone Hill Design

Ingredients

2 c. cooked, shredded chicken breast {I prepare my chicken like this, and keep it frozen in 2 c. portions}

4 c. raw kale, washed well, stems removed, chopped

1 c. diced celery

1/2 c. salted peanuts {check your label! Many peanuts are actually coated in starch. The ones I use contain peanuts, peanut oil, and sea salt}

1/4 c. olive oil

2 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard {check your label! The major brand of dijon mustard includes sugar, but many brands do not}

salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Combine all ingredients, dry ingredients first, then wet. Stir to combine. Using kitchen shears, chop kale into smaller bite-size pieces, which also further combines the ingredients.

Whip up some Survival Salad and keep it in the fridge. The next time you need a snack, or a lunch on the go, you will be all set.

and beautifully healthy.

Let me know if you try it?
