The Tile Wall

It’s still not official, but it is looking like THIS SUMMER for my big kitchen reno!! #projectkitchen #projectFHDkitchen

I have been leaning toward a simple farmhouse look, for the most part with this kitchen. You can get a feel for what I have been going for by checking out these inspiration pics for the overall space {plus our before pics}.

But you know me. I am always sitting right between farmhouse simplicity and high-gloss glamour, and I have been looking for some wonderful ways to glam up the space. When I decided on this hood inspiration from the picture below, I knew it would make an amazing impact, but an effort to be sure there was contrast, between the black hood and the wall behind it, would be in order!

I have loved the Stephen Gambrel kitchen below, for – like – ever! I am obsessed with the dramatic power of contrasts in this space, as well as the utilitarian and rustic wood touches. Talk about #farmhousesimplicity and #highglossglamour . And don’t miss the POWER of putting a white hood against a black tile wall. THIS!:

So, those two pics above got me dreaming, and then I saw this pic below. The foundation was set for my new vision. A stunning tile wall:

Can you just picture it? Won’t it be amazing!!??

Well, I have already narrowed down my choices quite a bit.

Fieldstone Hill Historic Home Tour

The Guest Suite

We are blessed to regularly welcome guests into our home. This guest suite was a part of a renovation and addition that we did 6 years ago. Here is a quick before and after exterior image of the back of our home that shows the addition:

The majority of our extended family lives out-of-state, and this is the epicenter of grandchildren. Fieldstone Hill sees its fair share of overnight visitors. So we are particularly thankful for our first floor guest suite that connects to our first floor bath.

Curtains, art and other details are much needed, but considering guest rooms can be the red-headed stepchildren of everyone’s homes, I share this unfinished space with joy. Won’t you come in?

This tiny room is made to feel larger by the ceiling height. We plan for ceiling to floor curtains, art on either side of the window below, and bedside wall-mount lighting {a great solution for tiny rooms}. A well-loved feature of this room? The MASSIVE family collection of legos are in those bins under the bed:

Below, you can see how the room connects to the bathroom for a comfortable stay:

The attached bathroom is also our first floor bathroom, hence the pocket door into the guest room and the regular door into our living room hall. The sink was crafted out of an antique piece of furniture that we had converted. The floor is mosaic slate:

Storage is limited in an old house, so when we added this bath, I had them squeak in the slender and tall closet/storage next to the shower:

One final and fun detail. The view below is seen from the bed in the guest room. This shot shows the fun variations in ceiling height in the room. See that fun little trap door? That leads to our boys’ room! We have a drop down wooden and rope ladder that leads from their room to this guest room! Definitely a favorite addition:

I am an Italia-phile.

I am 50% Italian by blood, but, people, I can relate to this funny pic with 100% of every fiber of my being:

I have been to Italy 3 times. Once, when I was 14, on a whirlwind tour. The next time I saw Italy from the eyes of a backpacking, hostel-staying 21 year old. My last visit was 10 years ago, with my love, for our 5 year anniversary. Italy is in my blood.

Everyone has something in their life that sparks such dreams and overwhelming passion and yearning. For me, that is Italia.

Italy is the art of man, colliding with the art of God. Italy is the essence of Living with Beauty. And each art-creation I personally create on this earth… every painting, every room, every design… each of them has a piece of Italia in it.

These days, like I do regularly, I am dreaming of when I will get to return again.

Fieldstone Hill Historic Home Tour

The Entry

Hello strangers.

I have been missing you! How have you been? This decorating momma has been crazy. Crazy busy. Crazy tired. and probably just crazy in general. How is it that I completely forget the time-vortex of a one-and-a-half year old? My decorating efforts these days involve reorganizing, resorting, and half-heartedly trying to shut our plastic kids’ dinnerware drawer. If you see a mom of a little one, please go and hug her and march into her house and send her off to get a pedicure for 2 hours…

Around here, decorating happens slowly. It still definitely happens, because of the joy I take in homemaking. But it is not on the top of our priority list. So, instead, we welcome the joyful process of slow-decorating.

But recently I had a deadline that propelled me into picking up the the toys and school books from every corner, and I cleaned up the entire house! And – perk – I decided it was high time I give you a whole house tour! It has been a very long time since I have properly updated, which is just a party-pooper, because who doesn’t love a good virtual house tour? I hope you will enjoy touring with me! While we have a long way to go, decorating wise, I take great joy in the fact that there are not dust-bunnies and stuff-explosion all over these pics. ha!

Let’s go room by room, week by week. And what better way to start than by inviting you into our entry?

This room is big for an entry, because it used to be a formal parlor in our 1820’s home. This was the formal reception room in the home, which historically would have been filled with the homeowner’s finest furnishings and art; a room for entertaining, hosting family occasions such as weddings, births, and funerals.

For us, it functions as a front hall. There are two entry doors {they are so close that I never know which door people are at when they are knocking!}. And it is also a well-used music room for our musical family. There is always someone playing on that piano around here. Even Georgia Lu. She screeches until someone lifts her up on that bench.

Painting the floors. yep.

Baby Grand Piano. This room has been crying for one.

Try to keep my dang house plants alive.
