Just like so many of you, I am slowly and lovingly and affordably trying to make my home look beautiful.

Last Spring, I scored a fantastic set of 6 cane-back dining chairs, in the style reminiscent of Louis XVI square back chairs. With beautifully worn aqua velvet padding. And one chair in need of a cane-back replacement.

My original plan was to replace the caning, since I love that look. And let our kids be kids – worrying about replacing the velvet seats later. Besides, they are the most lovely vintage looking color and I am a sucker for velvet.

But, the caning is not holding up on the other chairs, and I am now pondering a different option all together.

I am pretty much leaning toward the fabulousness of that last image. Right????

And this seems like a practical solution as well as a stunning one.

  • Oh yes! Love this idea. Hmmmm if your needing kid friendly what about a faux ostrich leather on seat and seat back and a lovely bold print on the back? Or. I know sunbrella makes an indoor/outdoor velvet. I’m sure whatever you choose to do it will fab!! Ps I have a great source for faux ostrich fabrics in a slew of colors.

  • I love the yellow, but I also LOVE the kelly green, especially with the backdrop of your grey/navy living room. Also, really like the rusty red of Brooke Shield’s dining room. I am sure it comes as no surprise that I can’t decide which one I like best.

  • I like the contrast of a fabric on the back and the front of the chair…it doesn’t have to be a graphic print, I just like the contrast.

  • Think the leather makes sense for a family home and yellow is very pretty. Would it look wonky to do the seats of the host/hostess chairs in yellow velvet? What are the odds of finding a match? Like the practicality of sitting on leather but in hot, humid Florida did NOT like the feel.

  • I love to see what Sarah Richardson does with chairs. In her most recent season of Sarah’s House, she did her dining room chairs in 3 fabrics, a velvet, a linen, and a stripe on the very back. I mention this because it might be a solution to let you keep that lovely vintage velvet on the seats for a bit longer if you want to. Have fun with it!

  • I can’t tell you which to do, but I can tell you how I make decisions like that. I imagine that I’m going to flip a coin. I assign heads to one option and tails to the other. Then I flip the imaginary coin and pretend it comes up, say, tails. This is the important part:
    I ask myself how I feel about the result of the flip.

    Disappointed? Excited? Relieved?

    That often tells me what I really want.

  • Yes!!! I love the fabric backs!
    Is it the color (gorgeous yellow?) or is it the chiseled design that you are smitten with? I’m thinking that maybe this could be a DIY project….but then your backs have a slight curve to them…and I don’t know if it would be possible without the know how and knowledge of proper materials for the back. To me, what’s important though is the look without paying high labor costs. Fabrics are expensive enough. Could you slipcover the backs? Crazy idea, I know. The back could be wrapped with upholstery tape and would then be comfortable to lean on…and you would have a lovely look. IMHO.
    I will look forward to seeing how you creatively discover your perfect solution. Whatever…it will be extraordinary! (sorry for going on so long)

  • I love that look! I just bought a pair of cane-back chairs on a whim from a yard sale before I realized how hard it is to replace cane. Out of my league! The upholstered back look is a perfect solution for your chairs, and I love all the color in the inspiration photos!

    Sorry I’m late to this party… I absolutely love that first photo with the painted wood and leather upholstery. I can see these painted, waxed and distressed with the Annie Sloan paints. And I agree with some of the other comments posted, I too would love to see a mixture of the covering materials to add a visual texture. Possibly using two different fabrics like this pin from Pinterest but in your fashion style and color palette. http://pinterest.com/pin/185351340885004234/ Can’t wait to follow you on this project.
