Vision :: Style Words
{Long time readers of FHD will recognize this post. But the question is, Have you picked YOUR style words yet??}
* * * * * * *
In defining what we love, and creating a vision of personal style, vocabulary is so important.
If we can find the words to describe what it is we love,
1. we can communicate that to others, and
2. we can remind ourselves of our goals as our spaces evolve.
In my first post on this topic, I encouraged you to try to NOT use design words to define your style {words such as: “eclectic” or “country” or “traditional” or “minimalist” or “coastal” or “modern”}.
Instead, today, I am going to encourage you to try to find your style words by using regular adjectives or descriptive words that appeal to you on these levels:
These words should describe:
- How you want your home to feel
- How you want your home to look, and
- The purpose you want your home to serve.
{Sound familiar? It is the same basic list to the one that I shared in this post on how one begins refining your personal style.}
Sooooo, Homework time!:
One.
take out your design style notebook
Two.
After you have written down all of the words that you first think of, refer to the list below, and see if any of these additional words help you to refine your vision.
Three.
Final step? Think on it, and then, narrow it down to five or so words that best describe what you want from your home.
More Descriptive Words: {this list is certainly not exhaustive. In addition, why not take a thesaurus and try to nail down the perfect words for your own personal style?}

Here is my own personal list. I use it whenever I make a design decision for my own home. This keeps me in check for my overall vision for our home, and it is especially helpful when trying to make purchase decisions:

*Glamour *Simplicity *Comfort Sophisticated Elegant Order BreathesThe starred choices above are the three that I have memorized, and “take with me” in my mind – especially when I am purchasing for my home. I also try to keep the whole list in mind. This way, when making decisions or purchases, I can ask myself: “Is it elegant? simple? will it add a touch of glamour or a touch of simplicity? will it help my space to breathe? will it help me unclutter?”
What is on your personal style word list??
Don’t worry if you think that your home does not currently fit into the description that these words offer. In time, as you keep these words of design reason in mind, you will slowly be able to turn your home into a place that you love, where everything serves the purpose of your home and family.

This is a great exercise which I did before when you first introduced it. I returned to that former draft and made some revisions. Here’s my current list:

What purpose do I want my home to serve?
I want my home to be a place where people want to be. I want people to feel comfortable and inspired and uplifted when they visit. I want my home to be simple and stylish and easy to maintain. I want my kids to have their friends over and not worry about what will get ruined.

Thanks so much for actually teaching how to define one’s “style.” I’ve moved around a lot and finally have settled down for my last move (I hope!) and each house has presented unique challenges. However, I’ve always looked for the following and that’s how I figured out it’s my style after reading your post!! Great exercise! Thank you for giving me some direction. I don’t know why I have never thought to actually sit down and WRITE what it is that I want from my home. Here is what I wrote:
Feel:
clean, tidy, inviting, peaceful, cozy
Look:
Bright, colorful, artistic, fresh
Purpose:
I want everyone who enters to feel comfortable and happy. I want it to be a sanctuary for my family. I want it to be a fun place for my children to live, and a space that inspires creativity and invention.
My style words:

My five words (and I’m just beginning your exercise) comfortable, vintage, unique, uncluttered, organized. Let’s hope I get there! 😉

I’d also like to add “Imperfect” which is a challenge for me since I tend to be uneasy when things are not “just so”. But living in a home that was built in the 20s, I need to learn to accept (and embrace!) the charming little imperfections:)
As much as I like the look of “vintage”, I don’t like to use that word to define my style as it tends to box me in, making me feel like I have to stick with ALL vintage, even though I may find myself loving something quite modern.

I’ve never been able to put my finger on what it is that I want to achieve; I just know I want my home to be a comforting embrace to everybody who enters. I have different words for different rooms/zones.
Main floor (kitchen/hearth sitting area – formal dining room – living room):
*Welcome, uncluttered, nature, comfortable, textured, simple
Master bedroom/bathroom:
*peaceful, breathe, airy, relax
Basement family/rec room (huge room with 9 ft ceilings):
*different, unexpected, playful, fun, party, kid friendly, funky
Here is my list:
Comfortable
Effortless (both in function and style)
Uncluttered (where Organized falls into)
Unexpected (I love matching things that don’t belong together. Stainless steel and hardwood.)
Artistic
The rest of the words that I picked were sub or close to the ones above.
I loved your idea of word inspiration rather than a formal titling. I chose: Inviting, unique, purposed, vintage, inspired, smart & 1920s. Not sure where I am going to go with this, but great to think about the purpose of my house.

It’s been 2 years and 3 months since we have moved into our home. Just found this post on pinterest and the words described me to a “T”. Paralized!!! so my first step is to think of words that depict what I want to accomplish? Calm, peaceful, uncluttered…a place for everything and everything in its place. Warm, inviting, timeless. I am so paralized I don’t buy…and if I do, I usually wind up taking it back! I am willing to try this because I am tired of bein indecisive and paralized, I haven’t even hung anything on any of my walls! And I have LOTS!! So let’s begin 🙂

This is awesome! I have one question though. Say I choose my list of 5-6 words. When I go out and find a piece that I really like, does it need to fall into most/all of the words? Or can it match up with just 1-2? I’m sorry if it see,s like a silly question – I’m just really style illiterate 🙁
no! this is a great question! Here is what I think:
These words are meant to free you up, not box you in. If you LOVE the item, and it meets even one of your words, then go for it. Of course, the ideal piece meets many of the words, but the words don’t have to match up with every item in your home.
The words are meant as a gentle guide, to keep you on task when you are shopping… so that Sales and Bright displays and Coupons and Desperation are no longer in the steering wheel!

Hi Darlene! Just wanted you to know that this exercise was SO helpful for me. I’ve been stuck in total design paralysis for about a year now. I feel like I have some kind of multiple-design-personality-syndrome. One day I’m into blues and midcentury modern and the next it’s all whites and coastal cottage chic. Every time my husband comes home to see sixty new paint chips taped to the wall I swear he starts to have an anxiety attack. 🙂
I tried to be pretty instinctive as I compiled my list, and the first word that came to mind was “CLEAN.” The next was “Simple.” And then, as I was pondering, suddenly I found myself saying, “I want my home to serve as a blank slate for me to be myself.” And all of a sudden everything just kind of clicked. I have a pretty multifaceted, artistic bent that’s always exploring something new (hence the mutiple-design-personality-syndrome), and it makes sense for me to want a home that’s a neutral space for whatever I’m interested in at the time… As well as a place for my creative brain to just rest. SO freeing. I remember reading once that the head of Essie nail polish had her whole home decorated in stark white. People were shocked, since they knew how much she loved color. But she commented that she looked at color all day, and wanted her home to be a kind of mental palate cleanser. This makes SO MUCH SENSE TO ME, but I needed your exercise to really “get it” and give myself permission to design that way.
Wow. So that was a long post. But I just wanted you to know how transformative your exercise was! 🙂

And I really like someone’s comment of making their home musical. This was such a useful exercise! Through it I decided that being organized and being intentional mean slightly different things to me. My home may never look like the homes on blogs and in magazines, but it can look put together and planned. Also, I can get caught up in spending hours making cute and colorful things for my home, but really I just want it to be a place where people feel comfortable and safe — which for me is a lot more of a realistic and manageable goal.
