Vision ::  Style Words

{Long time readers of FHD will recognize this post. But the question is, Have you picked YOUR style words yet??}

* * * * * * *

In defining what we love, and creating a vision of personal style, vocabulary is so important.

If we can find the words to describe what it is we love,

1. we can communicate that to others, and

2. we can remind ourselves of our goals as our spaces evolve.

In my first post on this topic, I encouraged you to try to NOT use design words to define your style {words such as: “eclectic” or “country” or “traditional” or “minimalist” or “coastal” or “modern”}.

Instead, today, I am going to encourage you to try to find your style words by using regular adjectives or descriptive words that appeal to you on these levels:

These words should describe:

  1. How you want your home to feel
  2. How you want your home to look, and
  3. The purpose you want your home to serve.

{Sound familiar? It is the same basic list to the one that I shared in this post on how one begins refining your personal style.}

Sooooo, Homework time!:

One.

take out your design style notebook and jot down the first words that come to mind in reference to the above list of 3 criteria.

Two.

After you have written down all of the words that you first think of, refer to the list below, and see if any of these additional words help you to refine your vision.

Three.

Final step?  Think on it, and then, narrow it down to five or so words that best describe what you want from your home.

More Descriptive Words:  {this list is certainly not exhaustive. In addition, why not take a thesaurus and try to nail down the perfect words for your own personal style?}

playful,  vibrant, classic, comfortable,  lush,  fresh,  flowing,  rich,  bold,  energetic,  peaceful,  serene,  elegant,  simple,  conservative, interesting, adventurous, unpretentious, unexpected,  order,  neutral,  textured,  showy,  artsy, funky, flashy,  glamourous,  regal, effortless, timeworn, spacious, formal, informal, bare, unique, creative, musical, sophisticated, wild,  daring,  fun, artistic, hospitable, welcoming, charming, uncluttered,  warm, hip, crisp, airy, breathable, bare, edgy, industrial, breathes,  minimal,  reserved,  homey, sentimental, inviting, ordered, natural, modern, unexpected, soothing, earthy,  cool,  cozy,  earthy, quality, sparse, storied, refined, lux, purposeful, kid-friendly,  rustic, vintage, relaxing, light, firey,  exciting,  calm,  open,  colorful,  free,  comforting, sumptuous, light-hearted, organized, colorful, gutsy,  posh,  plush,  proper, imperfect, beautiful, etc.

Here is my own personal list. I use it whenever I make a design decision for my own home.  This keeps me in check for my overall vision for our home, and it is especially helpful when trying to make purchase decisions:

{darlene}’s words of personal style:

*Glamour
*Simplicity
*Comfort
Sophisticated
Elegant
Order
Breathes

The starred choices above are the three that I have memorized, and “take with me” in my mind – especially when I am purchasing for my home. I also try to keep the whole list in mind. This way, when making decisions or purchases, I can ask myself: “Is it elegant? simple? will it add a touch of glamour or a touch of simplicity? will it help my space to breathe? will it help me unclutter?”

What is on your personal style word list??

Don’t worry if you think that your home does not currently fit into the description that these words offer. In time, as you keep these words of design reason in mind, you will slowly be able to turn your home into a place that you love, where everything serves the purpose of your home and family.

I would love to know your word list. Whenever you come up with it, come back to this post, and share it here in the comments!

However, I’ve always looked for the following and that’s how I figured out it’s my style after reading your post!! My words are: peaceful, warm, welcoming, relaxing, functional, gracious and comfortable.

  • Great exercise! Thank you for giving me some direction. I don’t know why I have never thought to actually sit down and WRITE what it is that I want from my home. Here is what I wrote:
    Feel:
    clean, tidy, inviting, peaceful, cozy

    Look:
    Bright, colorful, artistic, fresh

    Purpose:
I want everyone who enters to feel comfortable and happy. I want it to be a sanctuary for my family. I want it to be a fun place for my children to live, and a space that inspires creativity and invention.

  • My style words:
    inviting
    comfortable
    warm
    relaxing
    calm
    flowing
    uncluttered

  • My five words (and I’m just beginning your exercise) comfortable, vintage, unique, uncluttered, organized. Let’s hope I get there! 😉

  • My style words would be:
    Inviting
    Colorful
    Unpretentious
    Warm
    Creative

I’d also like to add “Imperfect” which is a challenge for me since I tend to be uneasy when things are not “just so”. But living in a home that was built in the 20s, I need to learn to accept (and embrace!) the charming little imperfections:)

As much as I like the look of “vintage”, I don’t like to use that word to define my style as it tends to box me in, making me feel like I have to stick with ALL vintage, even though I may find myself loving something quite modern.

Wonderful blog by the way, stumbled across it on Pinterest and I’m looking forward to learning how to find my signature style!

  • My words would be, Fun, unexpected, happy, lots of
color, light, bright, fancy, plain, I hope you get
the idea. Making people feeling happy when they leave.

  • What a great exercise!
    Here are my words.
Cozy, Light, Natural, Warm, Airy, Simplistic, Inviting, Fresh, Timeworn, Welcoming, Vintage, Nature, Creative

  • Just found this today and did it. I agree that it is a wonderful exercise!

The five words I narrowed down my style to are:

    Cozy
    Charming
    Timeworn
    Inspirational
    Fresh

    Thanks! 🙂

  • elegance
    simplicity
    comfort
    fun
    fresh

  • Comfortable, homey, inviting

  • Comfortable
    Elegant
    Lush
    Colorful
    Inspire
    Joy

  • Danielle Annette Logan

I’m having such a hard time with this because I love so many different looks and styles!! How do I decide!?!?! Help!!

  • I’ve never been able to put my finger on what it is that I want to achieve; I just know I want my home to be a comforting embrace to everybody who enters. The words I came up with on my own are neat, calm, quiet, comfortable, ageless, inviting, unpretentious, uncluttered, clean, bright, tasteful, relaxing and welcoming. Several of mine were also on your list, from which I also zero’d in on serene, simple and soothing. Maybe with your blog I can actually get there! Thanks.

  • Hi Darlene!

    My words are:
    comfy
    uncluttered
    vintage
    effortless
    genuine

Was really hard to narrow it down (also wanted:
    chic, warm, unique, and classic!)

As someone who suffers from chronic decorating paralysis, your blog has already inspired me so much! This was a fun first step in defining my style. THANK YOU!

  • What a great project! As a newly wed starting from semi-scratch, I’m so excited to create a home that my husband and I both love.

    organized
    peaceful

  • I have different words for different rooms/zones.
Main floor (kitchen/hearth sitting area – formal dining room – living room):
*Welcome, uncluttered, nature, comfortable, textured, simple

    Master bedroom/bathroom:
    *peaceful, breathe, airy, relax

  • Here is my list:
    Comfortable
Effortless (both in function and style)
    Uncluttered (where Organized falls into)
Unexpected (I love matching things that don’t belong together. Stainless steel and hardwood.)
    Artistic

The rest of the words that I picked were sub or close to the ones above.

  • I loved your idea of word inspiration rather than a formal titling. I chose: Inviting, unique, purposed, vintage, inspired, smart & 1920s. Not sure where I am going to go with this, but great to think about the purpose of my house.

  • This was very helpful to me! I’d been trying to pull things from pinterest, but to verbalize what I want added clarity-thank you:)
The first words I wrote down:
calm, warm, honest, lovely, light, safe, clean

  • It’s been 2 years and 3 months since we have moved into our home. Just found this post on pinterest and the words described me to a “T”. Paralized!!! so my first step is to think of words that depict what I want to accomplish? Calm, peaceful, uncluttered…a place for everything and everything in its place. Warm, inviting, timeless. I am so paralized I don’t buy…and if I do, I usually wind up taking it back! I am willing to try this because I am tired of bein indecisive and paralized, I haven’t even hung anything on any of my walls! And I have LOTS!! So let’s begin 🙂

  • Just found this on Pinterest, very cool!
    I believe my words are:

    Comfortable
    Creative
    Inspiring
    Happy
    Fun

but I also like Artistic and Timeworn with a a few Industrial elements thrown in. It is really tough to decide.

Thank you for this posting 🙂

  • This is awesome!

    Here are my words:
    Cozy
    Inviting
    Sumptuous
    Timeworn
    Kid-Friendly

  • Comfortable
    Elegant
    Spacious
    Welcoming
    Uncluttered
    Relaxing

  • A fun, cheerful, whimsical, appealing and most of all cozy, haven.

  • Light
    Welcoming
    Spiritual
    Restful
    Storied

    Love this exercise. Thank you!

  • comfortable
    clean
    orderly
    motivating
    inspiring
    natural
    earthy

  • Rustic
    Neutral
    Charming
    Welcoming
    Sophisticated

    Love this 🙂

  • I love that I can just picture everyone’s homes just by reading their list! My list: *rustic, *simplicity, comfort, natural, functional.

  • Thanks so much for the advice! My mind has been so scattered with random design ideas because I love so many different styles. I was about to throw in the towel. However this exercize gave me new perspective and hope for our first home =] It’s amazing how jotting a few descriptive words down can give such piece of mind.
    My words are:
    *unexpected *refreshing *kid-friendly
    versatile comfortable uncluttered earthy organized!

  • My words are peaceful, calm, serene, cozy, quiet, nature, water, stillness, reflection

  • The words I pick are…interesting, inviting, homey, imperfect, vintage, and beautiful.

  • My words!
    *simple
    *cozy
    *classic
    *joyful

    Also: vibrant, welcoming, peaceful

  • *Friendly
    *Chic
    *Luxurious
    family
    social
    comfy
    elegant
    rustic
    classic

  • This is awesome! I have one question though. Say I choose my list of 5-6 words. When I go out and find a piece that I really like, does it need to fall into most/all of the words? Or can it match up with just 1-2? I’m sorry if it see,s like a silly question – I’m just really style illiterate 🙁

    • no! this is a great question! Here is what I think:

These words are meant to free you up, not box you in. If you LOVE the item, and it meets even one of your words, then go for it. Of course, the ideal piece meets many of the words, but the words don’t have to match up with every item in your home.
The words are meant as a gentle guide, to keep you on task when you are shopping… so that Sales and Bright displays and Coupons and Desperation are no longer in the steering wheel!
Good luck, Barb! You can do it!!

  • […] a personal Pinterest party on a secret board, I’m trying to identify my own personal style.  This site is helping because it’s all about how to define it.  I got this from […]

  • My words are so totally not like my house is now. I’ve been picking up things that fit these words, but they just don’t fit in to my house yet! Cozy, comfortable, pastel, light, airy, interesting, old fashioned, open, charming, imperfect

  • Thanks so much for this helpful series! I’m so excited to know that my home is on it’s way to being filled with
    Welcoming
    *Fresh
    *Timeless
    Well Functioning
    Modest
    *Laid-back Elegance!

  • I really think this will help me. I am looking forward to it.

    rustic, informal, comfortable, colorful, organized

  • Right now I only have my room to consider…I’m renting. But still, it’s my haven and I love working on it. My trouble is not knowing what items I’ve collected over the years and love are worth having and what just adds to the general clutter. This is such a helpful tool! My words:
    -organized
    -open
    -sophisticated
    -fresh
    -calm
    -artistic
    -classic
    -earthy

  • My top 5!
    1) Cozy
    2) Bright
    3) Sentimental
    4) Interesting
    5) Breathes (I took this one from you! I originally went with ‘airy’…but I’m a respiratory therapist and the word ‘breathes’ speaks much more to me!)

  • Fun! I’ve been working on these words for a while now, and think I can finally sum them up. It took a while- getting over what I felt I SHOULD love, the things that I liked but mistook for love… so here is my list of words:

    Lovely
    Refuge
    Light
    Simple
    Natural

I think each word carries about 50 other “implication words”, which vary from person to person. Here is what my words mean to me:

Lovely: Beautiful but in a simple way. Not glamorous.
    Refuge: Safe. Comfortable.
    Light: Sunshine. White. Airy. Open.
    Simple: Basic. Functional. Clean. Streamlined.
    Natural: Rustic. Textured. Thick. Slab.

  • Loving
    Welcoming
    Light
    Comfortable
    Cocoon
    Organized

Now to do step 2. And I’m going to share this site with my sister. 🙂
    Thank you!

  • *Sunny!
    *Spunky
    *Inspiring
    *Playful
    Fun
    Comfortable
    Fresh
    Interesting
    Funky
    Energetic

Rather than the slow, mindful breaths of a monk I want to see the deep, rapid breathing of a dancer. I’m searching for a place that makes me want to run and laugh and rejoice in the way things are.

  • cozy, happy, fun, pretty, enchanting, relaxing 🙂

  • *comfy, warm, *kid-friendly, *functional, inviting, fun

  • Warm
    Inviting
    Creative
    Comforting
    Unique
    Lovely

  • this was a wonderful exercise..
for me my home should be my spa..
so my style words are :
    *serene
    relaxing
    peaceful
    *comfortable
    *elegant
    Welcoming
    Soothing
*kid-friendly and last but not the least organized

  • Hi Darlene! Just wanted you to know that this exercise was SO helpful for me. I’ve been stuck in total design paralysis for about a year now. I feel like I have some kind of multiple-design-personality-syndrome. One day I’m into blues and midcentury modern and the next it’s all whites and coastal cottage chic. Every time my husband comes home to see sixty new paint chips taped to the wall I swear he starts to have an anxiety attack. 🙂

I tried to be pretty instinctive as I compiled my list, and the first word that came to mind was “CLEAN.” The next was “Simple.” And then, as I was pondering, suddenly I found myself saying, “I want my home to serve as a blank slate for me to be myself.” And all of a sudden everything just kind of clicked. I have a pretty multifaceted, artistic bent that’s always exploring something new (hence the mutiple-design-personality-syndrome), and it makes sense for me to want a home that’s a neutral space for whatever I’m interested in at the time… As well as a place for my creative brain to just rest. SO freeing. I remember reading once that the head of Essie nail polish had her whole home decorated in stark white. People were shocked, since they knew how much she loved color. But she commented that she looked at color all day, and wanted her home to be a kind of mental palate cleanser. This makes SO MUCH SENSE TO ME, but I needed your exercise to really “get it” and give myself permission to design that way.

Wow. So that was a long post. But I just wanted you to know how transformative your exercise was! 🙂

  • Comfortable
    Spacious
    Warm
    Light
    Clean
    Function

Filled with things I love, not like.

  • My words were:
    Inviting organized
    comfortable clean
    warm & cozy uncluttered
    rich livable
textured lived in but not messy
    relaxing
    classic
    charming

  • Hi Darlene, just found this blog on Pinterest and i love it! normally i just follow my heart and now can i add some words for too 🙂
    warm
    cozy
    natural
    quality
    serene
daring …and al that with some sparkle of mistery

  • I was led here from the Hunted Interior but then realized I had seen your work before, you’re the mastermind behind Edie’s beautiful home! Love this exercise and hope it can help me nail down my personal style!

    cozy
    warm
    uncluttered
    welcoming
    light
    homey

  • just found this blog and love it I’ve been struggling with this for YEARS!

My list (my husband and I worked out together)
Comfortable, Simple, Welcoming, Kid-Friendly and Organized.

  • Warm, comfortable, peaceful, clean, tidy, growing, earthy and orderly

  • Organized
    Simple
    Comfortable
    Colorful
    Musical
    Modern + Vintage 🙂

    • I just stumbled across your blog and defining my style is something I need some help with. My words are: Fresh, Breathable, Cheerful, Unexpected, Effortless, and Inviting

  • man that was hard to narrow down i am so attracted to MANY DIFFERENT elements and styles… my list is:
    Peaceful
    creative
    rustic
    light
    charming

some of those don’t even seem to belong together but they were the ones i came back most to

  • This was so helpfu!

    Cozy
    Charming
    Uncluttered
    Colorful
    Kid friendly
    Whimsical

I don’t know how well these go together but maybe now I can find my “look”.

  • Thank you so much for this! Here are my words:
    Comfort
    Structure
    Unique
    Charming
    Bucolic
    Functional

  • This is what I came up with:

How you want your home to feel
    Comfortable and Inviting
How you want your home to look
Intentional (like planning and work went into every part of it)
    Your home’s purpose
    A Refuge from the World

And I really like someone’s comment of making their home musical. This was such a useful exercise! Through it I decided that being organized and being intentional mean slightly different things to me. My home may never look like the homes on blogs and in magazines, but it can look put together and planned. Also, I can get caught up in spending hours making cute and colorful things for my home, but really I just want it to be a place where people feel comfortable and safe — which for me is a lot more of a realistic and manageable goal.

    What a great post!

  • I too put words to rooms, then narrowed my words to spiritual, storybook and effortless. Thank you for simplifying my world.

  • Warm
    Welcoming
    Happy
    Uncluttered
    Livable

  • Love this exercise. It has really helped me narrow down what I love. Here’s my list, its more then five words but its certainly alot smaller then my original list and it might shrink even more as I go through the other steps.

    Warm
    Welcoming
    Organized
    Purposeful
    Timeworn
    Vintage
    Charming
    Sentimental
    Imperfect

  • Comfortable
    Creative
    Organized
    hospitable
    peaceful
    charming

  • Even though I am over a year late!…..

    calming
    happy
    airy
    comfortable
    simple
    sparkly

    🙂
This post was seriously helpful. I never really thought of discovering my style this way but it really helped. I think I need a little more pizzaz to my words and enhance on what I want, but this is my initial list 🙂
    Thanks for your awesome post!

    personal
    inviting
    rich

  • thank you for this series!!!

    Simple

  • I had a LOT of words.

I want my home to FEEL…
