Capturing memories, per say, does not seem to be the hard part for me these days. I always seem to have a phone handy, or a camera for the capturing… and then there is the awesomeness of Instagram, and the share-ability of Facebook for the sharing of treasured memories with your device-savvy relatives. But, I have to admit. I really really fall short in the Preserving of memories in my home. You know: Actually hanging photos on my walls. Taking the time to make photo books. Placing special images in special frames in special places. Oh, I am simply terrible at that. The fact is, we all know that the Nester is right: we have only 18 Summers with these precious ones. The most important thing is to actually UNPLUG a bit, tune into the here and now, and enjoy those memories AS we are making them. And, truly, it is also important to take the time to preserve these special times. To bring them into our homes as treasures, photo books, and photos in art form – hung beautifully on the walls to enjoy daily.

This past week, our family lost a friend to cancer. And I will never forget: before AND after the cancer, she made sure her house was CHOCK full of pictures. It was clear, when you stepped into her home, what her life was all about. What mattered to her. You could see a life well lived. You could see a life well loved. It has made an impression on me. on my heart. And I actually need to do something about it, or my lack of memory-preserving will not change.
My Steps to Memory Preserving:
1. Gather a collection of lovely frames, books, etc. 2. SET aside a chunk of time, SET on the calendar and 3. Find a partner in crime: a friend who is up for the challenge; to bring her own family memories and her own projects, so we can be in this together.
Time flies by. I am thinking it is high time I steal some of that time for being still, and start preserving the memories that are so precious to me. Want to join me in this? Oh yeah. I just happen to have the perfect motivation! Did I mention a HUGE Summer Memories Giveaway? I am so excited to tell you that #1 on my must-do-list above will be taken care of for three of YOU, in a BIG HUGE way. I’m so excited about this and happy to be part of the group 😉
My favorite summer memory is going camping with my relatives many summers during my childhood.
Fishing with my dad and brother and sister in Hawaii!!
Favorite summer memory is watching my Mom and Dad play with my children on the beach! They are gone now and I play with my grandchild and it all sweeps over me. The continuity, the love, especially the love!
My favorite summer memory is traveling with my family and discovering new adventures together
The 4th of July family reunion, all the kids and their kids from all of us kids get together for cherry picking, water fun, bonfires, and fireworks. There are 50+ of us. We plan it and they will come.
Oh, my! What a fantastic giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win some great stuff! Best memory of the summer has been being able to spend lots of one on one time with my daughter while my husband and son have been out of town. Lots of fun memories made. I’m blessed!
Love late-night summer trips to the drive-in with family and friends and our summer milkshake tradition at Tropical Treat 🙂
What a great giveaway! My best summer memories involve the my family at the beach.
Best summer memory: hanging out with my cousins.
I’m sorry to hear about your friend Darlene. I love photos in the home and the memories that make a momentary appearance every time you glance at them during the day. They are precious and you’ll be so glad to have them around you.
My favorite summer memories is when Jake was younger and we’d go to Cannon beach and Seaside in Oregon each year. Love those memories.
Best summer memory: Ooh, do I have to pick just one?? Summer is my absolute favorite time of year! I think for me it’s generally about the food. Not one memory, but the many, many summer meals with all the fresh food – corn on the cob, cucumbers and tomatoes, peach cobbler!! Oh, and fireflies 🙂 (not as food!) But, keeping the kids up a little later than usual to catch those magical fireflies.
Love this!! Since having my daughter I have tried to be really good about putting photos up on the walls, especially during her first year. I know I need to be better at this since I’ve kinda slacked off over the past 10 months!! Awesome and exciting giveaways!!!!
My favorite memories are probably family vacations! My family tries to do really varied vacation (no beach every summer for us), so I remember taking trips to Fort Bridger, the four corners area, driving an RV down the coast of Oregon and California, etc. Even now thinking about it makes me so happy. 🙂
great summer memory of going down the river with my parents on a jet boats ride
One year my family went to New Mexico and I found a puppy I wanted to take home. My parents said no and I was so sad. We took a lot of family vacations together and those are some of my best memories.
One of my favorite summer memories was spending a week at Lake Tahoe with the whole family. We all live on different coasts, so it doesn’t happen often!
My favorite memories are of playing by the lake, swimming, and catching crayfish.
I’d put the Love to Read Book Charm in my locket.
I’d love to have the Love Necklace Round Love Necklace in Sterling Silver with CZ.
I’d also love to have the Lilly Pulitzer Personalized Picture Frame.
I am so sorry for your loss. It’s great that she surrounded herself with the things she loved most about life.
Summer can be so complicated with the little ones – keeping them busy, but not wearing them out too much. My favorite thing to do with my littles it watch them playing in the sprinkler park. There’s something magical about the heat of summer mixed with sprinklers!
Definitely spending a week at the beach!
Spending time at the beach with our extended family!
My favorite summer memories are of stays at our family cabin in Colorado, fishing, horseback riding, and hiking. My mom would always want to light the wood burning stove, even if it wasn’t really cold in July.
One of my favorite summer memories is of playing outside with my brothers and other kids from our neighborhood – tag, hide and seek, catching lightening bugs, watching our tomcat catch and eat cicadas! Good times!
One of my favorite memories is picking berries with my parents and grandparents. My mother would make jellies, cobblers and pies all winter long.
OOOh MY favorite memory of summer is when school was out and my grandfather would take all his grandkids for Lemon Italian ices!!
Cool, love the idea!
This a great giveaway.
Good luck to everyone!
Fave Memory–catching fireflies and crawdads…
Favorite summer memories are at the beach
My favorite summer memories are from sitting on our patio, relaxing, listening to music and just enjoying the moment.
Summer holidays – traveling and having time to unwind.
Hi Darlene, I love this challenge to take some time to preserve memories. My kids are in their 20’s now and when they were young I made sure they had fairy tale summers. Those summers are some of my best memories. Not by spending lots of money but by setting up picnics and story book time under the trees in the woods or fairy hunts in the meadow behind our house. My son’s girlfriend says he tells her how his mom made sure he had an enchanted childhood. It makes my heart swell to hear that. My daughter and I have the best friendship and magical way of thinking. We still create art and collect together.
I am going to enlist her help in some family memory displays.
Best summer memories for me would be pool time or ocean time anything with water
Some of my favorite summer memories actually take place indoors. My mom, my sister, and I would all be in the living room reading books together. Often times, my mom would begin a series and we would just rotate until we finished all the books 🙂
One of my favorite summer memories is the time I went on a 2 week road trip with my mother and daughter. We visited relatives in different states , went sightseeing, and ate like queens. It was so much fun!
This is so important! Thank you for the reminder!
Staying with my cousins on their farm when I was only 8 years old.
