ditto :: my favorite bathroom ever

I am so excited about today’s ditto, because it truly is one of my most favorite rooms. I have had it in my paper files for a long time, and I still adore it as much as the first day I saw it!

The dreamiest bathroom ever: Oscar de la Renta’s bathroom, from his Punta Cana home in the Dominican Republic.

Truly. I think I could soak myself in this room until every one of my digits looked like raisins. There is so much I would ditto! Most of us cannot quite have an Oscar de la Renta bathroom… but maybe there is one or two touches that you can ditto and bring into your home??

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.  WHITE WALLS WITH A GLOSSY BLACK DOOR AND DARK, RICH FLOORS.

Contrast. surprise, surprise. Imagine that… another room that I adore, chock full of contrast!  Ditto!

2.  THE SHINIEST EXOTIC WOOD FLOORS YOU EVER DID SEE.

I want those floors. That is all.

3.  ARCHITECTURAL TWISTS THAT ADD HEIGHT.

Check out the amazing shape of the ceiling. It certainly adds architectural interest that pulls the eye upward. Another feature that I think adds creative height to the space is the window size: these windows are certainly not standard, and they have a vertical feel that echoes the tall bead board. Also, the thick molding around the room adds height to the windows, the door, and the ceiling.

4.  BEAD BOARD ALL OVER THE PLACE.

The bead board detail in this space is simply stunning. So much for the standard half or three-quarter wall of bead boarding. Nope. Oscar covers wall and ceiling. How cool is that?  Ditto.

5.  WOODEN SHUTTERS.

Don’t miss the solid wooden shutters that fit over those amazing window. Private. Custom. Classic. Quality. Creative. Oh, sigh! Ditto.

6.  A CLASSY BAMBOO BAR CART. FOR TOWELS.

Using a bamboo bar cart in the bath, and then covering every surface with inviting, fluffy white towels?? Well, that just throws this room over the edge into amazingness. It is a simple, useful, lovely touch that looks stunning.

7. WHITE MARBLE.

I love white marble in bathrooms. I guess I always will. It seems that most of my favorite bathrooms have white marble.

8. A CLAW FOOT TUB WITH A TRAY OF AMENITIES.

I happen to love claw foot tubs, and have one here at Fieldstone Hill. They truly do offer an amazing soak!

9. A SHOWER WITH A VIEW. 

Because this shower is glass on 3 sides, it sits right in the middle of the room without taking up any visual space. The eye travels right through it… and for that matter, so does light! It is genius. Now, let’s not discuss the impracticality of it. Or the fact that one might feel like they were showering in a Macy’s window display. Just let me pretend for a little bit, okay??

  • Our showers are in the corner but have the see-through doors on two sides. Locking the door helps and it’s a bonus that you can’t see your reflection in the mirror. 🙂 {And I have a housekeeper that cleans them, so bonus!}

    I like the white walls, the height of the room, and the natural lighting. I love the floors, but I don’t think I would put them in a bathroom.

    • OH! me tooooo, susan. I love so much about this space, that I couldn’t find a way to tactfully weave this sentiment into my post: “Oscar, what in the world is UP with that Boob light?????”
      I am thinking that a sculptural gilded chandy {not the crystal kind, although I love them too}, or even sculptural wood, would be PERFECT in this spot. Especially with that ceiling.

  • Well, you beat me to the boob light comment- surely my eyes deceive me?! I love everything else about the room. I’m thinking I may have to try that ceiling idea in our master bath. Ours only slopes on one side, but I think I could make it work….

  • I like the unique spot they put the shower, between the two sinks, I have never seen that done. This bedroom has so much warmth and character. Kathysue

  • I’m laughing, but there is a mirror straight across from the shower so I could see all my fat and remind myself to eat better and move more each day.

  • The room is absolutely wonderful and confirms my choice to use beadboard liberally in my bathroom reno. The light fixture had me laughing because I could not believe it; these were the first things that were replaced when I bought my house! ….then laughed more at the comments. Would love to see an over-the-top sparkly chandelier…or maybe a simple Belgian in wood with tiers of lights. Either way, stunning room.

  • So this can’t possibly be *your favorite bathroom ever because its now *my favorite bathroom ever. 🙂

    This is truly a dream picture for me, because it totally put into perspective how I can design my long and narrow bathroom once we gut and remodel.
    I can’t have the high ceiling, but I can still have the abundance of beadboard. LOVE! Thanks for sharing your fave bathroom. Blessings, Barb

  • My very favorite bathroom is yours from your own house, but I do like the wood floors in this one, the bathtub with feet, the sunny window, and the table-thing under the window. Natural colors and useful storage. I like white+texture, like those towels.
