How to decide with dittos
Last week, I had to decide my bookshelf color so that my contractor could order the doors with the correct primer color. I wrote a little post -y post about it. And thank you so much to everyone who chimed in about my decision for our School Room / Library! Aren’t I a lucky gal to have the most stylish readers to pick their brains on decorating questions?
You see, I could have made my decision based on practicalities, such as what color shows fingerprints the least, etc…
But I didn’t.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am a BIG believer in making practical decorating decisions.
But guess what trumps practicality?
Decorating with what you love.
I needed a reminder. What do I love? Because it can get confusing with all of the info and inspiration that is out there, right?
So, I had a brilliant idea. “You know all those posts you write every Monday, Darlene? You know. The ones where you pick a room you love and write about what you would ditto? Well. Why don’t you check those out and see what kind of bookshelves you find??”
Well, Shock and Awe. Take a look-sie at what I found:

Clearly this is a look I love.
And oh. What is that nonsense I am always blabbing about over here at Fieldstone Hill?:
Decorate with what you LOVE!
And golly gee. That is what I am going to do. Deep gray/navy bookshelves it is. I will keep you posted on my specific color choice options!
So, How to decide with Dittos?
- Make sure you have access to a collection of images; images of rooms you really truly love {that is what I am calling “dittos”}. You can read more about how to collect these images here.
- Then, once you have a decision to make for your home, refer back to these dittos. Remind yourself of what you love.
- Trust yourself, and GO FOR IT!
What decorating decisions do you need to make?

I love the dark shelves, they have suck impact.
My decision right now is what kitchen countertop to get. I know exactly what I love but sometimes practicality and cost get in the way. I hate that!
oh, girl. I hate that too!! But somehow, I am a believer that one can get exactly what they want with some creative rule bending….
Love that color Darlene. Can’t wait to see the finished result. By the way – thanks to you – I just re-decorated my entryway using a ditto. So proud of myself! I went back to my Pinterest board, picked out some elements from some spaces I love and did it! I purchased a couple new pieces and used some of what I already have and it looks like an entirely new space. I even bought a new mirror from Horchow on sale for under $200 that mimics the very expensive Louis Phillipe antiques I love. Thank you for all of the inspiration!
