Today’s ditto features Brooke Shields’ living room from her NYC townhome, as featured in Architectural Digest. She is living up the city life with her young family, and singing on Broadway. Sounds great to me!

Simple good design. This room is not trying to be too fancy, but it is simply filled with lovely things that are used in a thoughtful balance. There is a steady presence of neutrals, but just enough punch color and dramatic touches to elevate the design. I really, really love this space. My ditto list could have gone on and on.

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

1.   RICH GRAY WALLS; WHITE TRIM.

A deep wall color just never gets old for me. I especially love this rich gray, Chelsea gray by Benjamin Moore.  This color looks amazing in Brooke’s home, and its richness is made even more amazing with the contrasts of the crisp white upholstery and thick, white wood trim around the room. I actually plan on ditto-ing this exact color in our downstairs bathroom at Fieldstone Hill.

2.   GILDING.

I love gold. I mean, really love it. It is so classy and lush, and it works with cool tones as well as warm tones. In my opinion, every room could stand a touch of gilding! Apparently, Brooke agrees. Here we see gilded picture frames {large and small}, a gilded credenza, and gilded mirrors. Ditto!

3.   MEANINGFUL ART .

The art pieces flanking either side of the fireplace are custom paintings of Brooke’s daughters. I love that they have a twist of creativity, using sepia and gold tones, and then, oh my, those crowns! Why have just-art, when you can have meaningful art? Her family will treasure these pieces for generations.

4.   A NEUTRAL RUG .

We have been seeing so many graphic and geometric rugs lately in the design world. Something about this simple, textured, neutral rug makes me smile. It is just so peaceful and grounding. It certainly invites layering. I love it in this space.

5.   LUCITE COFFEE TABLE .

I am digging Lucite coffee tables as a light and airy choice for living and family rooms. Especially for families with children, where glass is not a practical choice.

6.   BEAUTIFULLY UPHOLSTERED X-BENCHES FOR EXTRA SEATING .

There is not a good photo angle that shows this, but do you see those gorgeous X-benches under the credenzas that flank the black, sliding window-pane doors? There are two of them, covered in gorgeous fabric, and adding colorful symmetry to the space. Not to mention, extra seating that is quite flexible. Ditto.

7.  BLACK INTERIOR DOORS .

Need a touch of drama in your home? Try painting your interior doors in a glossy black. It may seem like a gutsy move for some, but it really does add interest to your space. And since black is a neutral, it works beautifully in so many spaces.

8.   RICH, DARK WOOD FLOORS .

I am loving dark stained wood floors these days. And waxed to a pure shine! Take a look at how the deep floors ground this space, and look simply stunning! A gorgeous foundation.

9.   GORGEOUS USE OF A PUNCH COLOR.

Brooke’s space features touches of a deep coral. If you have a neutral space, and desire to add a punch color to your space, this room is a textbook study on a classy use of a punch color. A touch here and there, using interesting textures and fabric, the coral makes its presence known without it demanding all of the attention. Definitely ditto worthy!

  • It’s really a pretty room. The first thing that caught my eye were the bunny prints- I like the black and white against the gray walls. The drawings themselves remind me of a cute story my kids and I have read together by Meindert DeJong.

  • This is so fun! I so enjoy that you actually ask what we would ditto 🙂 I picked up another punch color -the lime green (is there enough of it to be considered a “punch” color?). How fun is it that it’s a lime green lamp with a white shade and a white lamp with a lime green shade? I know this is more architectural than design, but they have radiators! And it looks like they’ve incorporated them by painting them the same color as the walls. I love my radiators and am always so sad when the radiators are ditched in old houses for forced air heat. And those french doors! Yes, the black is fabulous, but just the fact that they’re there and are a little non-traditional in style is wonderful in itself. Have a great week!

  • What a gorgeous room! I would totally “ditto” that rug and so agree that there is just something about the simplicity of a neutral rug that. It really anchors the room without drawing attention to itself, you know? Those paintings of her girls are fantastic and I would “ditto” it but probably just for my daughter since I’m pretty sure my son wouldn’t let me but a tiara on his head and have his portrait drawn like that. LOL!

  • I can’t think of a single thing I would not find ditto worthy in this room! I LOVE the glossy black doors. I also love how she used chartreuse and coral together, as punch colors, in such a classy way. Simple, clean and beautiful!
