ditto :: an amazing library; part one.

Today’s ditto post is part one of two posts I will be doing on this {awesome} room. I have two pictures of this space, from two different angles, and it was far too gorgeous to lump both pictures together. Far too ditto-worthy! Part two will be featured next Monday.

Enjoy dissecting this room {featured in Chicago Home and Garden}, and discovering what you would like to ditto from this space. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

DITTO :: {WHAT I WOULD STEAL FROM THIS SPACE}:

  1. deep gray-blue walls. I love the complexity of this color, and the drama! It gives such depth to the room, and somehow manages to behave like a neutral. Now, that is my kind of canvas!
  2. the most to-die-for rug I have ever seen. Does anyone know the source for this… the most AMAZING rug EVER?? I am guessing that it could only become mine in my dreams, and I am not quite sure how I could actually ditto something so unique… but, just in case it happens to accidentally land at my doorstep, I need you to know how badly I want to ditto this rug. Badly.
  3. orange bookshelves. I have a love affair with orange. And I am just taken by how swanky these clean-lined shelves look with a rich splash of orange. I am unsure if that is paint, or some kind of textured paper. I am leaning toward the paper, especially since it seems to have color variation and texture. Either way, this is such a high-gloss glamour look, and a dramatic statement for a library. It brings the room to life!
  4. a velvet sofa. in olive green. I adore velvet sofas. I adore olive green. I am fully prepared to ditto some olive green velvet! gorgeous.
  5. gold drapes with a golden, long, roman shade. This is such a beautiful window treatment, and it is made even richer in its beauty by its gilded look. But its impact is doubled because the bright, shiny, and light effect of the gold drapes contrasts dramatically with the matte, deep, blue-gray walls. An amazing use of contrast.
  6. a show-stopping and fun chandelier. Every room needs a disco-esque light fixture to up the fun-level, no? Just ask Edie.
  7. restraint and minimized clutter on the bookshelves. The orange is fabulous, right? Well, all could have been lost if those shelves were all cluttered up with miscellany. Instead, this designer wisely stuck to tightly arranged books that sit all in a row, and a few pieces of functional sculpture and pottery that have a big presence. It is the restraint and decorating self-control that make these shelves so gorgeous.
  8. pieces that don’t match, but are each strong in presence. This ditto-able idea is not just found in the ceramics pieces I just mentioned, but are found on an even larger scale with this rooms furnishings. The sofa and the two chairs actually have nothing in common… other than the fact that they are each strong pieces that are loved by their owner… and therefore, they work. That is definitely a design philosophy of mine: that you should buy pieces that you REALLY love, and magically, they will work together if you employ symmetry and restraint along side of them. hmmm. sounds like I need to write a post on that.

  • Darlene – I would ditto it all. Do you think they built the box walls around the bookshelves? And from this photo it is hard to tell, but are there bookshelves on the side walls as well? It is the perfect room – to have family gather and be surrounded by great reads. Love it. And what a rug! I bet some inspired genius could copy that pattern and “paint” it onto fabric – how about indoor/outdoor so it is durable enough for three kids and a rowdy dog?

    Love this, looking forward to seeing the next photo.

  • This is a beautiful room and the rug is gorgeous! If I’m not mistaken, I believe it’s a Kyle Bunting rug (check out kylebunting dot com.) Every rug on that site is unbelievable. I have no idea how much they cost because I’m too scared to inquire.
